Thanks Pavedwave for this detailed reply.
I received a Bigstick and tried it few days ago. It's a great feeling and good body exercise I think. I went out for a 10 km ride. I was concentrated in my paddling and suddenly I had the impression of a car behind me. So I had a quick backward look : no car. But guess what ?... Superman on tha asphalt, the same as you described. I already experienced wheel bite several times but I have to say that wheel bite on rubber is a more efficient way to stop... I had little skin injuries including on my face. When people ask, I explained what happened. Well, i don't really think they believe me. Despite this hard first contact, I'd like to try again but I have to wait a little bit because my wrist was twisted and it still hurts. So for the moment, it is foot paddling with wrist protections... |

lipstick = ripstik? or something else?
i just met this surfer dude John at Greenlake the other night, he said he was looking for an upper body workout so I told him he could borrow the Bigstick, hoping he'll drop a line!

Funny how sometimes things barely register a blip, but I vaguely recalled this being mentioned and now, here's another thing thats come full circle...
After scouring craigslist for months, and trying several skis, I finally came upon one that Gareth is helping me do some fiberglass repair on.
A Valhalla Victory -- it's not the latest and greatest, but it was affordable and is still considered a "race worthy" craft. This sport moves as fast as slalom skateboarding in design changes, but I'm not so interested in racing. More in just getting across the lake faster than the SUP.
Paddling's all good in balancing out the core - and its also nice to have options when its pouring buckets here. I'll probably end up picking up the bigstick a little more often now as a result! |

Well, I know one extreme long distance skater who's made the transition. At least his arms will match his legs now!!

For me paddling is definitely a fun add-on, but far from transition or addiction like skateboarding. I've come to find paddling enjoyable and a good workout. You get the core and the back muscles cranking in rhythm and set your feet right against the hull and power ahead for speed...moving across the water with some speed is definitely fun. Being instantly closer to nature is surreal, seeing the wildlife, getting away from the urban scene just after a minute paddling out. It would have to be the adventure and scenery that could drive me those kind of distances on water. I'm sure Dave will be learning tons out there in different weather / wind conditions.
I just haven't really found any other physical activity that feeds back energy to me the way skateboarding does. Skateboarding with paddle is also a fun diversion, but it still hasn't "gripped" me like LDP or just pushing for miles. The distance addiction's interesting to me because I wonder what it is intrinsically that makes one activity "addicting" or part of one's core. I biked everywhere as a kid, I think many of us did, but biking just never took hold like skating.
Do you know what kind of standup board Dave's on for the SUP portion? What I quickly discovered with SUP is that my board of only 2 years age would be considered outdated with respect to the "flatland" stand up scene -- but that's because it has a planing hull, designed for surfing 1st, flatwater paddling 2nd. Most of the tribe of SUP folks have moved to displacement hulls and tread across flatwater 90% of the time. |
