I got mixed feelings on this one.   Recently turned 40, and I know there's a six-pack in there, it's just being kept warm by a thin layer of excess ... skin.  Yeah, I'm sure it's just skin.

Actually, the act of pumping a skateboard the last decade is the main reason my abs and back are strongest and most defined they've ever been.   But whether going the extra distance by trimming out even more the pleasures of life  (maple bars, for starters)  is really worth the chiseled abs?    There won't be any sequels for "300" to try out for, that history is done and over.  So I'm not sure why else.    Right now I figure if it happens, it will be a side-effect more than a conscious effort.

But I did find this story on NPR a good incentive to not go any farther backward.

A goal toward "Flat Abs" versus "ripped abs" is more pragmatic for most of us.

Flat abs are a function of not letting your gut hang out as much as it is losing fat. Most people don't realize how lazy stomach muscles get after a while. I have been working on them as well. Fat loss, not weight loss is the key.

So you want to be rippped ripped just like Jesus Christ as Greg Behrendt said in his first 1/2 hour comedy show on comedy central.
Swimming will get you ripped or doing sit ups with your back on a chair seat or table so your back can go past flat. Sit ups this way hurt like hell  but you will get ripped. Swimmng is easier on the back and will make you faster LDPer because it is a full body work out. But after I did get ripped like Jesus Christ when I was in my twenty's my stomach looked great but I was no stronger than when I had that 1/4 to 3/8th inch of fat on my belly.
Then then the beer kicked in I became a expecting single dad for 27 years it was still their after I quit drinking 16 years ago.

Last year I weighed 244 lbs and  today I weigh 169 lbs. Once I got under a 200 I rediscovered skateboarding and the I found out about  LDP skateboarding I knocked it down to the 169 lbs.
So I guess I had the baby after a 27 year gestation period but I am not ripped but my stomach is flat again. As Eddie Murphy said in the Nutty professor when he turned in to Buddy Love I can see my dick again.
I am Happy and not worried about getting ripped like Jesus Christ again.

I  had Fat appliance delivery guy work for me when I was in the appliance business he could go out all day on a truck and deliver 15 refrigerators a day. When he got pissed off he was scarry dude. My dad weighed 280 lbs and was stong as a ox so being ripped is over rated.
Sorry if this offened any of you but I love funny comedians and this is my open mike tonight.

dude that's astounding.   nice work!

and the jesus stuff is LOL... maybe a career in carpentry will build ripped abs  Wink

swimming for sure... i spent all Thanksgiving in a pool with my daughter, she can stay in there all day.   i need to actually re-learn how to swim efficiently, always been able to tread water but never felt like i was doing it just right or for decent distances.   there was a woman in that pool who swam laps for nearly a solid hour, i'd love to be able to do that out in open water...

Carpentry will teach you 3 thing how to start drinking at 6:00 am or smoking dope. Number two how to be able to throw a nail and drive it in a framing nail in with one swing. number 3 how to cut round rafter ends with a skil radial saw. My Dad hired this carpenter to help us frame our house  he taught us the drinking part ,nailing ,round rafters. I found out when I was delivering prefab fireplaces to house sites they smoke a lot pot on the job.
It amazing how they build the house straight.

Being a long time all around ocean waterman. I have always swam with my head out of water with churchhill surf fins. So it was really hard to learn how to swim in a pool and swim a 2 to 3 miles a day when I was in the Airforce traing for mini triathlon.

I came up with a happy medium that was the breast stroke it's gnarley  on your pecs and it also strenght your lower back and abs also plus I could see forward every stroke I took. So I knew where I was going when I tried to swim were normally with my head in the water and turn your head for air it freaked me out.
I can swim surf style with my head out of the water beat most people in a race because it was what I felt comfortable.

In the  mini Triathlon I first swam head above water surf style so I would not crash in to anybody or get caught in the swimming dogpile that happens in triathlon at the start.. I did the breast stroke for about a couple minutes when I hit open water.

I noticed I was losing time so I took the goggles off put them around my neck  went back to my surf style swimming started passing the traditional swimmers . It was fun to see the look on their face when I passed them.

So like I always say what ever works for you is how you swim, skate or your life.

But one thing I did gain from breast stroke swimming experance. It did increase my water endurance and speed and built up my upper body muscles. That I was neglecting on the bike and running everyday in training.
I hate weight lifting I did enough of that working in the middle of the night cross loading Aim 9 missles and 20mm F -15 ammo cans that weigh 100 lbs a piece in the rain of okinawa, japan.

I would have to say its just personal goal to be chiseled and ripped. I got into standup paddling skateboarding for one of two reasons. one being core conditioning it has to be one of the greatest things I experienced next to paddling a one man canoe. Second I also is pushing 40 and having a whole lot of muscle is not so much the goal its more cardiovascular, stamina and keeping your healthy. Being new to pumping and LDP I say I am on my way to a healthy life style with a whole lot of fun doing it longboarding with my wife and kids. So is having a six pack of abs that much of an issue? IMHO have fun at what we know best and the rest will follow.

To get six pack abs you will need to get your body fat percentage down in the low teens, probably about 12 percent body fat.  But being lean alone will not do it.  You must also develop your abdominal muscles to a degree where the ridges and bumps appear.

So you need to lose fat to become super lean AND you need to work the muscles like any other athlete.  LDP will help with fat loss and muscle building, but you will need a comprehensive program of nutrition/diet, cardio and muscle building to get a true six pack.

The best ab program I've seen is called Legendary Abs, it is published by Health for Life.

Whether it is worth the required work is a personal decision.
