Just spotted this interesting post on coastlongboarding (added some line breaks.) Sounds like Canada's a bit more permissive than the US when it comes to skateboarding streets...same as NZ.

next time ask the cop which statute or act he is trying to apply the force of law to (as Canadians we have no laws....just statutes and acts they try to put the force of law to....
everything they do to us is by our own consent....DO NOT CONSENT TO ANYTHING ), and politley ask him to be specific about it.
As well, ask him if he is a peace officer(all RCMP are peace officers)when he or she says yes they are a peace officer, ask if they have a signed statement from an injured 3rd party specifically stating the breach of the peace they witnessed or whether they have observed you breach the peace....
skateboarding is not breaching the peace, we still have the common law right to travel on the roadways in CAnada, and if they state otherwise, politley ask to show you which statute or act specifically revokes this right....
also remember that a skateboard is not defined under the Transportation act....it is not a motor vehicle and you are not a pedestrian while riding your board...do not let them tell you otherwise....we have definitions of a motor vehicle and pedestrian....we are neither while riding the board....remember the skateboard is NOT defined as something that is illegal to ride on highways...you are exercising your common law right to travel on Canadian highways....
politley let the officer know you DO NOT consent to any conversation with a peace officer who does not have either a signed 3rd party statement or has themselves witnessed you breach the peace....
BE POLITE...no one like a mouth piece....but be firm in what you say and are standing for...they have NO authority over us until we consent to it....everything in law is by contract...no contract= no consent=skating like the freemen we are!.......
witnesses help too...keeps the popo in check...hope this helps "

Ah, the idealism of youth
Maybe thats the way it works in Canada, I dont know. But I do know that people get arrested for doing perfectly legal things all the time. Heck, Ive been arrested for attending a peaceful rally before, spent several hours in jail until the charges were dropped. They knew I wasnt doing anything illegal, they just wanted me off the street. Same with these cops. If you go around asking for statute numbers and asking which laws blah, blah, blah, expect to end up in handcuffs or your board taken or a citation issued. They know that half the people wont fight it and even if you do, it doesnt hurt them. Same with swearing at an officer, it isnt illegal, its constitutionally protected speech, but try it and you will be arrested, the charges will eventually be dropped, and that cop will get a pat on the back for getting another punk skater off the streets for a few hours. |

we had lots of police stop us in nz, but a quick chat, some pleasantries and we were allowed to continue.
Get sheldon to thell you the story of when he got picked up by a patrol car and delivered to me and adam. The police are funny in NZ.
tone time a car pulled up onthe other side of the road to us, the window wound down and the cop just shouted out 'you're a bunch of crazy bastards!' then drove off with his lights going.
