And I can't believe a fat 40+ can do it.  I've been reading this forum for a couple of weeks and was intrigued.  Bought a Bennet truck, some wedges, and a mess of bushings and set up my old Sector 9 Bingin as best I could from the descriptions I've found here.  The board is not ideal (too stiff and wheelbase is on the short side), but it was a cheap way to try LDP out.  Lo and Behold it actually works!  Within half an hour I started to get the hang of it.  What a kick!  Thanks everyone for your posts. Keep them coming as there are a lot of lurkers out there reading them.  I think I'm going to order me a Pulse!

The setup:

Sector 9 Bingin: 38" Bamboo 8.5" wide. 22" wheelbase stiff w/ concave
Sector 9 Wheels: 70mm 75a
Bennet 5" truk front, 15 degree wedge orange and white Khiros.
Tracker RT 129mm truck rear, 7 degree de-wedge, red and yellow Khiros.

Any suggestions to improve this would be welcome.

Awesome!  I've just been getting into it too, which is tough in winter, but it's so great.  I'm really trying to get my dad out to try this summer.  Your guys' descriptions seem to match each other.  Cool

Any idea on an "Official LDP Purchase"?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so usually weather is no deterrent.

I'll keep playing with what I've got, but if I do get more serious I think the official purchase will be a Subsonic Pulse.  From the posts I've read here and on Silverfish Subsonic's craftsmanship is top notch, the board is a dream, and he appears to be responsive.  I just wish I knew how much of a difference an LDP specific board would make.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.  I've only been out once and that was only about a 3 mile trip.  I have a lot to learn.  My personal goal is to commute to work this spring/summer some time (13.9 miles) and if possible, to do it a couple times a week.

did you seriously do a 3 mile trek your first time out? That's incredible man. I'm sitting here working with  a set of paris 150's and a S9 cloud 9 board and I can pump myself a couple dozen yards at best and I wish I had the cash for some bennets

sweet man!  how do you like the flex on the board?  seems at 22" wheelbase you could maybe drill another set of holes farther back for the rear or conversely push the front one forward a bit, or both -- I'm not sure how much deck you have to work with either direction.

Yup.  I went to a local school yard with my kids.  The tarmac there is very smooth and has an almost imperceptable slope.  I started to get the hang of it while going downhill and then next thing I knew I was going uphill.  Then I pumped most of the way to lunch and all the way home (all pretty flat terrain).  It's a good workout.  I'm not sure what makes the Bennett work better than other trucks.  It has a ton of rubber in it compared to other trucks so I guess that lets it turn more.  I used the blue/white/orange Khiro rubber setup as suggested in the Gear section of Paved wave too.

I could probably move the front truck forward and gain an inch and a half.  The board has a large kicktail and the rear truck is right up against it so no dice there.  But it's a moot point... I ordered a Pulse 2.0... so I'll just live with the Bingin the way it is for now.

As for the board... I've never spent any time on a flexy board, so I don't know how to compare.  I'm a big guy at 225lbs and this 100% bamboo bingin just flexes a little under my weight.  I feel like I'm working pretty hard against the board and I'm thinking some flex will smooth my pump out let me relax into it a little.
