How Do All
I have just finished testing my truck and bushing modifications. the goal was to find the simplest way to prolong the life of my bushings, the set of bushings I am using now have done over 130 miles and I hope to do many more on them before they need replacing.
I do not know how to put the pictures here so here is a link to my pictures and details of what I did.
A big Thank You goes to Eric for the work he has done to help prolong the life of many peoples bushings here and for the inspiration he has given me to try and improve my setup which resulted in this post.
I like this setup. You gotta be good with your hands. What size kingpin did you use?
Has anyone seen the new Titanium Randal kingpins? Gnarly stuff. Sure, titanium shatters when broken, but it's harder and stronger than steel. With a setup like this, and the added benifit of a Ti kingpin, I'd be willing to bet the farm that shredding may be a thing of the past...
Almost inspires someone to start buying Bennett baseplates and Ti kingpins in bulk, and start cranking these things out, to sell for a good profit. While said manufacterer was at this, maybem, just maybe, do some modded kihros or venoms to fit said uber-hybrid trucks.
Damn, someone could make a killing doing these things...
from the looks of them the "new" Randall kingpin is just an ordinary titanium hex bolt. The threaded area is still too long from what I can see. _________________ No matter where you go, there you are....
I used a Kingpin with a shaft length of 2.75" it was one of the domed headed ones at the bottom of your linked page (stock RII kingpin 2.5" though the shaft is longer than advertised, well on the ones I got anyway), I then cut the shaft down length down to 65mm.
The Ti pins look ok but but as mentioned there is just too much thread, though you could buy the longest one and cut it down which should leave minimal thread.
Thanks for this Barry, I just performed surgery on my Bennett and added one of the kingpins that I took out of one of my Randalls. A touch of grinding to length and away we go..... _________________ No matter where you go, there you are....
I hope you get some good results with your set up.
I still use the same set up and my bushings last for ever; that said though there can be a down side to using the same bushings for ever;
I have found that after a time the bushings start to lose their rebound, become slightly compressed and have a definite "Dead" feeling. this in turn leads to a lack of enjoyment and sadness
A couple of things that can be done to prolong your enjoyment include:
loosening off the kingpin nut when not using your board, this lets your bushings relax and means that they are not under compression 24/7 this helps to keeps your bushings feeling fresher when you ride again.
Also changing the bushings every so often, even if they don't look all chewed up, lets face it they don'e cost that much to replace, even if you replaced them every month or two it would not break the bank.
I hope this extra info adds extra value to the original mod.
