Here in MN, the skate season is drawing to a close, as temps fall with the leaves. Once the snow and road salt begin, it'll be til April or May before I can get out riding again. Having really progressed this year in my abilities and fitness, I don't want to let it all rust on me, sitting around indoors playing with bushing setups and watching the snow out the window.

So I'm finally going to start snowboarding this year, as seasonal cross-training for skating, and hopefully something I'll come to love in it's own right.

Anyone have experience with going back and forth between the two, any advice?

as a longboarder and ldper along with a BIG time snowboarder.  They are way different IMO.  I compete and its a different atmosphere from longboarding or surfing it is still awesome!  If its your first year be prepared to have ALOT of bruises. But have no fear it gets better Very Happy

My only advice is DO IT!  I went ballistic snowboarding every weekend and weeknights, just after graduating college and into my first real job, most of my extra income and time went into lift tickets.  Always bought "last years" rental models to save a few hundred and spent that on the tix instead.

I only get up there a little bit now, because of cash and family plans, but man it IS addictive.  You spend the first couple days on your butt, but after that it only gets better.  Quite honestly, I find "sticking" the turns and carving long, deep lines on a snowboard is exactly the addicting feel that got me going from snowboarding-->slalom skateboarding-->LDP.

Never competed, but had some offers to run gates a few years back.  I was always into the "freeride" more than anything.  Maybe having a Sims165 had something to do with that  Smile    Go up a few times in a row to get a good feel for it, and you will dig it!!

kinda wondering about "alpine" snowboarding  ...

... seems like this carving-based subdiscipline is sort of an analog to what I love about skating - and its unpopularity among snowboarders sure seems similar to the way shortboarders view longboarders!

Snowboarding looks like so much fun, but it's too expensive. I also live in Indiana (Flatlands) which is really good for LDP but horrible for snowboarding haha. So besides upfront cost of the board and equipment, there is the cost of travel and time off work. This pretty much isn't an option for me. Any other ideas on cross training? I think I may just hit the gym really hard this winter build my legs up and do treadmills and stairmasters (Despite my hatred for them, but what can you do when it's snowy and cold out).

this is some of the coolest stuff.   i remember watching videos back in the late 80's / early 90's of these guys in France carving hard and laying down perfect lines, at amazing speed.    when I freerode I always tried to stick my turns, but with hard boots and an alpine board you can turn it up another notch.   doubtful I'll ever get up as often as I used to...

what we've been doing for our skate-fix over the winters are garage sessions.   the hills get wet and even on a cold sunny day it can still take until afternoon for everything to dry up enough for skating.

i've also kicked around the idea of XC skiing, or snowshoeing, both seem like great ways to stay in shape and get some bright sunshine beaming off the snow, something we need in these short and cloudy days in the northwest.
