...that summer there was a big inline skate marathon that ran on the burke. it was a perfect chance to make an attempt at riding the trail without touching.

...it was absolutely perfect. the last mile was awesome. nothing but rolling. my family was there at the finish line. and i accomplished a 4 year old goal that completely stretched my imagination and redefined my understanding of what was possible.

... interesting that in trying not to even set foot on it, i've gotten to know it better than i ever would have otherwise.

Wow what an amazing story.... it's so inspiring to read about a dream coming true and a personal goal being achieved, especially with the help of friends.  Reading your post gave me goosebumps!  You won big on that initial blackjack game.     Laughing

Nice to see the slice of history again Derek!!  Some months back someone had posted they would like to know the timeline of LDP, and it's a website addition I've been pondering how to build ever since.  Well now I think I can pull our stories together and make one of those wikipedia timelines on LDP with amoeba, dinosaurs, and tadpoles crawling up on land and surfboards at the beginning and hairless humans pumping and surfing LDP hover-boards at the end.

For those who've followed the homepage from the beginning, Derek's record pump across the Burke has been there all along, his story's just never been fully told.   There will also be a little more about our collaboration and years of Zen trail surfing in Jack Smith's book which should be out soon.   Nearly ten years ago I'd have never known this trail would become such a bloodline between us!

I hope to plan on some cooler fall and winter skates again, destination-- Redhook?   Smile

thanks everyone for the comments. it feels great to be a part of this community of pioneers. you guys seriously rock.

jo- nice call about the blackjack! i never thought about it in that way- that a lifechanging jackpot didn't have to involve loads and loads of cash. and the whole experience has completely changed my life. i'm sure there are several other people here who have had similar revelations with their own skating, including you with your spontaneous world record. awesome! those stories are my favorite things to read on here.

and jp- a redhook skate sounds perfect. would love to hit the trail or greenlake when you get a chance. and the amoeba timeline sounds pretty dang accurate. for several years i looked like the hunchback of notre dame on wheels.

and here's a blast from the past. last night i saw an adam colton vid on a LBL dancer, and the next thing i knew i had reassembled my 60" flexdeck and was riding the neighborhood in my skivs at midnight. i also resurrected my old arbor too. what a great discovery to find that i retired it way before its time...

again, great to be part of this community. thanks.

Yeah, i miss living right on the burke. Now i have to settle for a 10 minute drive to the cedar river trail. The CRT is ok i suppose, but it has so much less character than the burke. Wheras the burke is full of different scenery, ups and downs, a few interesting hills, urban, suburban, and rural conditions, the CRT is pretty much consistently the same thing. Its one long uphill on the way out followed by one long downhill on the way back. Its also almost completely deserted, which is nice for slashing across the whole trail and dancing around like a goof, but I miss having strangers talk to me about LDP and the occasional thumbs up or 'hang loose' sign. I plan on making the trip out to the burke on weekends for a change in scenery, maybe i can join you guys on a redhook run here soon.

hey Dave-
yeah, i hear you about the CRT. but that solitude is a dream most of the time. and if that trail is 10 minutes away, it's not much more of a drive up to marymoor...

Dave, the Burke misses you.   It is a lively place, the more you skate it the more regulars you see over the years.  Just like you used to say how some people thought you were me, now I'm pretty sure some people are thinking I am you!   Laughing     I'll bet the longer you ride the CRT you'll find the same.

Let's hook up soon guys!
