Having a slow but fun day in Maryland! Certainly no speed records here. I just broke a kingpin six miles from anywhere at mile 84. Laying in grass looking up at the sky never felt so good . Somehow will make it to 100 miles! I guess walking with broken board doesn't count towards mileage . Cheers to my Ultraskate friends! Hope your luck is better than mine... |

I did a solo Ultraskate today on the Pinellas Trail here in Largo/St.Pete, FL.
I started at 830am with the intent of skating until I'd had enough. It was a beautiful day here, in the high 70s, sunny, with a clear 40 mile recreational trail 2 blocks from my house. I took a moment to appreciate the beauty of living in Florida, humidity and all, this place is damn nice, and the flatness which once made me long for the mountains of my native CA has now become what makes this place LDP paradise. This is my first Ultra, I did no specific training, and I rarely skate over 10 miles mostly due to family/time constraints, so I figured this first attempt would give me an idea of what I'd need to work on for a more serious go of it the next time around. About 1.5 hr into it I realized I had forgotten to put sunscreen on which would be a problem, so I found a nice little health food store that was just off the trail and got some along with a organic natural energy bar and a fresh water. A hour or so later, I was in downtown St. Pete where they were having the Farmer's Market, so I walked around a bit, bought and enjoyed some blueberries and some water before heading back toward Largo. On the way back, I took the Gulfport spur of the trail, which ended up being pretty rough from an asphalt perspective - good thing I rode my 72a Avilas. In Gulfport I was dying to find a bathroom, so I decided it would be a good time for lunch. I had a Grouper Sandwich with a pint of Guinness, took off the Vibrams to stretch out my feet, and then got back on the road. I arrived back to my starting point in Largo at 2:15p. I bought a new water, took another break to stretch out my feet, then geared back up and started the North leg of my journey, however within less than a mile, I decided that the foot pain which was only getting worse was getting to the point where it was taking away the bliss, so I called it a day. The end result was 37.4 miles, my feet were beginning to chafe and I was having some very uncomfortable strain/cramping on the arches of my foot which made pumping no longer fun, so that's when I knew it was my time to stop.
It's amazing how much a long skate reveals comfort issues that go unnoticed on shorter rides.
My Vibrams are awesome and I can't fathom going back to regular shoes, but they are tight and over the miles my feet were not happy. I'll be ordering a larger size shortly.
The concave and narrowness of the Mermaid was another issue. I couldn't find a comfortable spot for my rear foot, and my Size 11s were hanging off the board with the concaved edge digging into my heel and toes which became another source of foot discomfort. It made me wont for one of the flat 'maids...or perhaps I'll need to try a Galac. If there was just an extra inch of width where I place my feet, I'd be so much more comfortable. Would a wide version every be considered for those with larger feet?
I really dug striving for the most efficient pump over the miles. Each time I ride I feel like I learn new ways to flow better and get more in tune with the movement. I learned a lot today. Today was an amazing day. Pumping my Mermaid makes me feel so grateful to be alive.
This is an awesome event that I was stoked to have taken part in. Thanks, JP! My hats off to all of the brethren across the globe who took part, and all the psychos who do the 24hr event - crazy! I'm waiting to hear your accounts... |

Hey Guys, bummed I didn't make it. My old dog, Murphy, died last night, so I had to help bury him this morning... I was thinking about coming for the second half, but I just wasn't feeling like skating.
I hope everyone who DID show up had an excellent time, I'm looking forward to the Ultraskate! |

How Do All
I am very sorry to hear about your loss ogmarshall, I am sure the spirit of Murphy will be there running along side you whenever you go skating again
I hope everyone had a great time and did whetever they wanted to do, wether it was a hundred miles or just chilling with friends.
I had a great morning at Dorney here in the UK with some great friends but alas, the curse of the Dick Head struck me as I had chosen not to wear my helmet whilst at Dorney (I did wear it to skate there from home but thought I was safe there ) anyhow after skating just over 35 miles I hit a bump/stone or whatever and pirouetted off my board hitting the back of my head hard, I decided then to call it a day and go get checked out at the local hospital. (where I was told I was too old to skate and should give it up ) whatever you say doc
I did howver manage to skate another 2.5 miles to the train station where I got picked up so 37.5 miles was my total for the day.
I am now nursing a major hangover type headache, from the concussion I have a very stiff neck from the whiplash of trying to fight the fall, my shoulders hurt from trying to stop my head hitting and my kidneys hurt from hitting my lower back. apart from that I feel great
I think what got me the most was that I was feeling better than I ever had before, I felt like I could have just kept skating for days.
Lesson learned and I will now be a dedicated permanent helmet wearer from now on
I am now going to give it a couple of weeks and do another attempt at Dorney (weather permitting) just to see what could have been.
Take care,
Barry
