I canoe all of the time. It's a great core workout when done correctly. _________________ I won't quit my day job. |

that surf ski looks pretty intense! and yeah i think any kind of cross train like this is boss. great for the back/shoulders and gets your blood pumpin.
i've been jonesin' for it to get warm enough to take the paddleboard out again on the lake and the puget sound. |

yeah, i got one back around february, but have only really put it to one long commute (12 miles) once, so I'll put a few words down here, but I really prefer to test the #### out of stuff more, usually.
my first impression is -- it is FUN to toy around with, for some short bursts, maybe a mile or so down the boardwalk, alternating with pumps, pushes, and paddling.
i actually got overly confident with it my first time out, and was riding with the drop-deck Cambiar, which, unlike a topmount, completely exposes the wheels. and i quickly found out that urethane wheels + the rubber stop things on the end of the Big Stick, just so happen to cling together like glue, and when I planted the stick a wee bit too close to a front wheel, I ended up doing a Superman to the asphalt. it was not a pretty scene, but miraculously there was nobody on that part of the trail that day, so my pride was spared
i really like the feel of a Stand Up Paddle board on the water, in fact my daughter and I just got back from the lake today, after a few hours skimming the surface. the efficiency there is a lot different. as an 'alternate technique for distance' (particularly LONG distance) i'm not entirely convinced that the Big Stick would make all the same sense for land. my feeling is the energy expended outweighs the benefit.
but I can see it getting your upper back, lats, arms, and torso all working in synch and really working on paddle technique with the Big Stick. and I do like the idea of just shaking things up and getting other parts of your body balanced out -- and still doing it on 4 wheels. i still consider myself a bit novice with paddling in general.
the other huge plus was talking with Steve at Kahuna. that guy seriously has his heart and mind in the right place. I really like his board designs and his business attitude -- so I really hope his stuff takes off.
hope that might enlighten a bit- |
