What's a better stock setup for a beginner LDP

Initially when I got myself a longboard I wanted to be able to LDP but I didn't know at the time that thats what it was called so I wound up buying myself the wrong kind of board. I wanna get myself a new one this coming spring but I'm torn between two boards, since I'm a beginner and a college student, I really don't wanna have to spend TOO much time learning how to LDP (yes, I realize you gotta actually learn something but I wanna be able to get as close to being able to LDP as I can with what little I can already do.) so, the two boards are either a Loaded dervish, or this guy here:

http://www.amazon.com/Sector-Sand...-Complete-Longboard/dp/B001BKDOAQ

which would allow me to LDP easiest if I'm a beginner?

also, if I do go with the loaded dervish, should I get flex 1 or flex 2?

If you're not into spending a lot of money on a board/setup then a dervish is not the way to go.

If you're able to spend such an amount on a board though you could get really far LDP wise. And it's worth mentioning that even though you can pump a Dervish, it is still not ideal... especially not for that price. For a versatile ripper though the Dervish is a good choice.

A Subsonic Pulse is $140 http://subsonicskateboards.com/
A Galac GTCPLDP is $135 http://galaclandsurfing.com/

A Rayne Timeline is $140 (note that this isn't a LDP specific board)

An Insect Dragonfly (again, not a specific, but supposedly good for pumping) is $160

or if you want something really cheap buy a sector 9 carbon trylam. its around $80 for just the board. its what i use and its not LDP specific but it works just as good. JP can vouch that it is definitly not a wannabe board. i cant give you the specific URL but i will give you S9 url = www.sector9.com

Oh right! You lot discussed that board. Here's a whole lot of trylams. Pick a colour Wink http://www.daddiesboardshop.com/search.aspx?find=trylam%2c

I like the idea of something that's build specificily for LDP, but from what I see there it makes it look like it's all in the right set of trucks, so what does that mean for the sector 9 that I talked about in my origional post?

also, which would be outright easier to LDP on for me from the get go? the pulse or the Galac?
jat.

You'd have to hear with Mr Paved Wave about the difference of the two.

From a readers perspective the main difference seem to be that the Pulse has concave and the Galac doesn't. The Pulse also seems to have more wheel clearance, but since you'll have to add risers and wedges to get your truck angle right, I'm not really sure it matters.
When it comes to the looks though I would have to go with the Galac. Subsonic give you several choice to customize the look of your Pulse, but at a cost. Not saying it's not worth it (Just look at LDPpanda's new 2.0), but it makes the price tags between the two differ more than the original $5.

Not sure if this made you any wiser.

Longboard Larry offers the LDP Walkabout as a complete.

Just adding another option to the discussion.

it's fine but now I'm just beginning to wonder what exactly makes a board an LDP board. I thought there were specific set of requirements or characteristics that defined one. I mean, I'm seeing a somewhat common shape, but it just seems like it's all in the trucks and wedging. Is this true?

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.  LDP specific boards have super wedged front trucks with soft bushings, then dewedged less turny rear trucks (generally Bennett 5.0/Tracker RTS 129 setup non-precision.)  Usually you use 75mm wheels for a good mix of top speed and acceleration.  Generally the board goes over the front wheels which might make you wonder, "What about wheelbite?" but the there's normally so many risers used that it rarely happens.  You want to get your foot right over the front truck for maximum leverage.  In turn, people put a foot stop (normally some rock hard bushings if you wanna be cheap like me) to prevent the front foot from slipping.)  Boards range from 36" to 39" usually.

I hope I didn't lead you astray.  If I'm completely wrong on something, hopefully one of the veterans will shut me up.

I don't know what your time frame is, but you are welcome to check out my pulse sometime.  I will soon have a Galac, and I have two friends who just purchased Bentleys.  If you don't mind a drive here(Easton), you'd be able to test drive a few.  We also may head your way to check out the B and A trail later this month or next if that works better for you.

I would also consider the Roe Mermaid if the distributor comes "online" soon.  I really, really like my pulse and as someone brand new to skating as well as LDP, I appreciated that as a complete I already had a board dialed in with proper wedging, wheels, bushings to fit my weight.  That made it very easy for me to LDP even without a skating background or much balance to speak of.

As to your last question, I think the flex of the board is also very important.  As I progress with pumping, I am figuring this out more and more.  I can't imagine it is easy to know whether concave vs flat feels more comfortable without trying both, and trying both for many hours if the goal is ultraskate length LDP.  I can see enjoying each type of board in the long run, but they are very different.

scooter, I might just have to take u up on that offer. Please shoot me off a PM when you and your group intend to hit up the B & A trail. I'd love to join you all and if you'll let me, I'd love a chance to try out some LDP boards. I actually got a chance to talk to scooter over at subsonic, and he was able to answer ALL the questions I had about LDP, explaining all the stuff that petray said in his post and confirming some suspicions that I'd had all along.
scooterdad

Will do.  Hope to have a date picked out soon to get over there.  Of course with weather like what we've been having we'll want to pick a day when the trail is clear.

Let me know when you hit up the "B of A trail" (what is that btw?) too!
scooterdad

The B & A Trail is a converted rail trail, following the old Baltimore and Annapolis railroad right of way.  It is 13 miles long and runs from Annapolis to Glen Burnie, basically taking you right to the circular loop around BWI airport.  It looks like it is slightly uphill from the Annapolis end heading north, so it makes sense to start at that end.  Adding in the BWI loop at the end might make for a very nice 36 + mile trip.

It might have ultraskate potential in the future though it closes at dusk, and I've no idea if there is an all-night / dark option near there.  Two friends from Easton and I are planning to hit that trail soon, but we're still trying to finalize the day.  Thursdays work best for me because I am off, but I know that doesn't work well for everyone.  I have no idea how crowded it gets on weekends either.
