Turning a Motion Spirit 43" into an LDP

Hey guys,

Firstly, thanks for such an informative website. Just browsing has given me some ideas but I have a few questions:

At present I feel that I may have hit a brick wall regarding the LDP of my Motion Spirit 43” pintail:
- I’ve got the rear trucks on the middle setting (I have a choice of holes to use in the deck to shorten or lengthen the  wheelbase) in terms of flex
- I’m running Red Retro ZingZags which are 78a and 70mm
- I have Holey trucks set up in the following way:
 The rear truck is de-wedged with a 9/16” to 5/16” angled riser and has the smoke 78a Holey bushings
 The front is wedged, again with a 9/16” to 5/16” angled riser but with the softer pink coloured 72a Holey bushings

Last night I tried to play around with different bushing combos to see what difference there was but the above setup was the best I could get.

Here are the questions then:
Do you have any ideas on how I could improve things further?
Should I change trucks?
Or use a bigger riser on the front?
Are my wheels ok for LDP?
Should I just keep my Motion for cruising and invest in something that really is designed for LDP such as a RR Mermaid?

Thanks for the help.

Is the smoke bushing in the rear still allowing a lot of turniness at your weight?  If so I'd try stiffening up the back more with a harder bushing.

I'd try more angle in the front -- using shock wedge pads or something like the Khiro angled riser kit, so that you get more angle but not more height!

70mm wheels are fine.   I'd say bump up to larger wheels when you feel that your pumping is worked out, but you've reached your top cruising speeds and you simply want to maintain a faster momentum.

What is your impression with the Motion so far?   What you would get with the Roe Mermaid is more foot room in the nose and for the rear footing as well.   The Motion's composites are really nice, so if the flex is working out for you, I'd be curious to know your weight and what flex of board you got.    Or does that one come in one flex, you simply adjust it with the wheelbases?

A good way to stiffen up the rear end of the board is move the rear truck up to the front holes of  the rear holes and shorten the wheel base.
You should get more pump out of the board also.
Just keep moving thing around on the board and new bushing and angled pads or non angled pads till you get a pumpable board your happy with.

Plus doing this you get to know of the mechanics of the board what works. What does not work for you.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply! I've tried the harder ruby red bushings (88a) but it makes pumping seem much harder. Out of interest (and also because I'm a novice) i tried the Pink 72a to see what difference it would make - the result was less ability to pump and more squishiness...

I'm around 165 pounds and from the feel the smoke bushings feel the best. The Motion i have only comes in one flex, as far as i know. The flex is adjusted by chaning the length of the wheelbase. This link may help you:

I do think that the construction is really good, although at first i was sold with some really old Gullwing cruisers that couldn't seem to turn at all. I was also using Gravity Super Gs (80a) and since changing the wheels and playing around with the trucks and bushing combos things feel much nicer.

There is no camber in the board though, is this a problem when it comes to pumping? How much more angle do you think i can get away with? I'm thinking of buying the Khiro wedge kit. Also are Holeys really suited to LDP?

the quality of the flex in that board is more important than the camber IMO.  like Sheldon's Pulse, which used to be my proto until he stole it  Very Happy   started out as a flat / concave deck and has been really nicely broken into just a very slight rocker feel when it flexes -- but the response is still really nice and snappy.   from the honeycomb and comet Motions that i've been on, the flexes seemed really nice.

you'll never regret the Khiro wedge kit, and you can play with the Holeys using the same logic, wedging front, dewedging rear.   you might try a narrower hangar truck in the future and see if you like it for easier pumping.  the holeys will serve well as an all-around carver-pumper truck though.

I've also been playing with LDPing my existing board with Holeys.    I've wedged the front upto 17degrees, dewedged the back by 5d.    However whilst it will pump on the flat its hard to maintain and the wedgeing has pushed the ride height up by nearly 2cm making it very hard to foot brake.    I'd be interested how you've got on following the advice in the thread.

For me I'm going to drop back to running flat no risers as the holeys make for a super fun surfy carve, but with no pumpability.   Will look to get some Bennets or trackers and go for a dedicated LDP setup
