I still surf a couple times a year I am more of fair weather surfer. But since I am older with a upper back injury I body board or body surf or hand board but I have always been a well rounded waterman. I started out bodysurfing as little kid then rubber duckin and snack bar traying it kind of like paipo board invented by the newport beach locals, then stand up surfing. I was friends with Mike Lambrese when he was a pro body boarder for morey boogie. We would swap board out in the line up.
So I learned how to body board also their not to many well rounded waterman out their except in Australia and some Hawaiians.
Plus on small days body boards are great for small tubes and you catch twice as many waves when you have 4 wheel drive propulsion.
I am in the same predicament you are I only live a couple block from the beach. But it really weird when I lived inland I went out everyday or every few days. But when you live at the beach you go check out the waves everyday and you check them out and say to your self it not worth going out today. I will wait till it better than you only hit it on the perfect days. I have always gone out were it less crowded because I hate fighting for waves with a 20 other people also.

As for the northwest, we just get a few months in the summer for the "warm" surf which still means at least a 3-mil wetsuit, a shorty if you're brave. Now that it's winter some guys still hit Westport, and there are some bigger breaks at a place called LaPush. You just gotta be pretty hearty and committed here. I don't really go enough to get better, as it's about a 2.5 hour drive to get there, but it's always fun to just go surf the soup.
