So whats your pushing setup?

i love to push on my long rides lets see who has what setup for when they feel like going back there primitive root Laughing and with all the rain here in seattle you have to do a lot of pushing so lets see what you got.
Me-
board: LY Spud
Trucks: 10 mm Grizzly trucks
bearings: 10mm bear bearings
wheels: 83mm 75a Flys

Its a good board but its missing rain flaps so when i ride my legs get soaked but its still a very good board
blake

REALLY?!?!??!?!?! does no one push at all?
jat.

My girl friends set up is similar.

LY Spud (of course)
97mm fly's (bought close to mint condition for lower than half the price)
Randal 180's

It just rolls over anything, be it cracks, rocks and edges.
I'm sure it'd roll over children, but I have yet to confirm this.

I myself roll a:

LBL Drop pin
Abec 11 Gumablls
Randal 180

Nothing compared to the Spud, but it works.
Probably the setup I've got the most mileage own simply because of its versatility.
rodgon

my pushing setups.

Eat Asphalt Garage bomber: 42"

1" drop front and back
dropthrough

Grombiz Yellow magic 72mm 78a wheels

Randall 180s, Red Bushings..

And

Legendary Smoothdrop: 44"

.78 drop front and back
dropthrough

Randall 42* 180 front, Bear 40* flipped hanger

Tunnel Racing Formula wheels
Bear Pumpkin Bushings all around

pavedwave

This is what I would call my "go to" pushing setup now.    I would almost say this board was a direct result of last May's ultraskate, where I pushed the entire time on a rollsrolls carbon sportster, and my feet and joints paid the price.

The deck is stiffer and wider than Mark's Cambiar stock board, and the aluminum brackets have their own sweet flex.   The only thing I'm not totally comfortable with on this are speeds over 25mph, but mainly because I'm running a front Bennett on a dropped deck.

Crake

Nice setups^^
I love to push distance.
Im currently using:

Landy Spud
42* Randals
83/78 Flywheels
Venom bushings

Be well,
Crake
Parson Adams

Depends:

Dervish, Randals, SpeedVents or BZs (Down [small] hill and screwing around)
Loaded Pin, Chargers, Zigs or Flashbacks (For college commute)
Ed Eco, Randals, Gummys or Speedvents or BZs or Flashbacks (For impressing the ladies)
Gravity Spoon nose, Trackers, Sick Sicks (Bank riding)
Vintage Mike McGill (ca. 1988), Vintage Rat Bones, Venture Trucks (For when I am nostalgic)--actually a student gave this to me last year.  It was his brother's old board.  I was more of a Barbee or Underwood model person back then.
edp_swakakin

And.....

"There be a Bennet an that binding arrrrr"

So does that count as a Pusher?  Confused

jat.

Even if the setup had side winders it could still be a persons dedicated pushing setup. Heck, the board wouldn't even have to be low to the ground.

As long as the person feels comfortable using it as a pusher, be across New Zealand or to the local mart, a person can call it his or hers dedicate pusher.

... In my opinion.

yup exactly. now lets see them!
jat.

Since my LBL is my LDP'er my Dervish is my preferred pusher:

Holey trucks with smoke bushings

And Abec 11 81a Gumballs.

EDIT:

This is how the graphic looked before the abuse.
wafflesole

My preferred pusher is a demoseed, dropped holeys and 75 mm big-zigs/tangs

at the moment im on a loaded fathom, 25mm dropped brackets and same truck/wheel combo

the demonseed is amazing for long, unknown skates where there might be a few big hills. The fathom is fast becoming my favourite allrounder, its a bit sketchy over 30mph though.
fuzzydeer

Custom demon seed built for specifically for pushing across south america. 9 inches wide foam core.
Special 10mm aluminum axle tracker fast track mods (at 166mm width) with siesmic 73mm blue speed vents jimz and venom bushings mixed all crazy. This is what I have been using latley.. My next board is going to be lighter and I'm getting some super ultra light weight trucks custom made for push races.
Here are some pictures of George my current ride just before I took him across peru and bolivia (I used 85mm speedvents):

Chris Yandall's Pushing Setup

For long distances on smooth... minimal expansion cracks(I go for quality rolls, not quantity), my set up is a 36" GALAC(my daily exercise deck).  Bennett5.0 radded and de-radded, with 72/62mm wheels back/front. My ride consists of constant turns switching foot to get more body movement for old age muscle awakening Very Happy

I like full nose and tail for optimum foot placement switch stance push, pump and carve board-walking movements mixed up along the way to go long distances and not feel or look repititiously boring.

Yes, I'm not all talk! I skog the talk daily and show people this movement is worthy of expertise. I love it when old people come up to me and feel inspired simply by the pedi-dextrous movement.

Anyways, after all these years, and rumors about my style.. I'm strong at it like a 55 year old feeling death is lingering if no progress is made. Smile and not afraid to spill the beans in y0 face!

HELL YES!

Welcome to the forum Chris!  I've seen your skogging videos and I know you pump as much as push!  Dont be a stranger to the forum!

Keep on skatin', skoggin and pumpin!

(I know you will!)

Skogg master!
wafflesole

paul, can you give us any more info on the deck and trucks?

would be really interested in an uber light setup.

nat
fuzzydeer

I'll let you know more about my next one when it happens.
Drawing the trucks later this week.
Going to have them made for rogue hopefully.
as for the board, have lots of ideas and I want to talk to graham about them.
Belegnole

My "push" deck is my only other deck unless I count my daughter's. It's a EW Supercharger w RII 180s and EW 70mm wheels. It gets pushed whenever it isn't rolling down a hill, ramp etc....
wafflesole

all set up and ready to roll. 1 and a half inches off the ground. full turn on holeys. 75mm o'tangs.
edp_swakakin

Nat - you know thats a bad mama jama right?
fuzzydeer

My trucks are going to be neat, super light, fairly costly however.
The will feature a huge inward offset of 12mm or nearly half an inch (.47"}
Narrow probably 168mmI might go as large as 170 or 164-170 havent decided yet.

True 50 or 45 degrees. trucks are trued by weight. if you weight over 175pounds you have a different pivot cup then a person weighing under 175.

10mm axle made of aluminum. I've tested them for one full year and it outlasted the rest of my gear. I will have the superfluous material removed rom the center (hollow axle}
The truck will have many holes and fancy honeycomb shapes machined into them.
the space between the pivot and the kingpin will be 1.25 inches.
The axles will be fixed by a special patent pending method that locks them in permanently.
It uses very high quality threads on it, normal nuts will be to crude o use on these trucks. harhar!
Machined in a temperature corrected room to be within 1 thousanth of an inch accurate!
again, harhar!

Designed to fit my next revision of push deck from rayne like a glove.
75mm wheels max!

Made custom by SGS racing.
My pro-model and a concept truck for the geometry materials and machining used.
Hopefully the lightest through kin pin trucks ever.
hopefully the lightest ever period.
However I will use mine with JIMZ bushings in the base of the rear.
pavedwave

Paul, with all this precision stuff does it mean you're not going to use the "rattling bearings" criteria anymore?   I sorta liked that we had that in common!!    Very Happy

My pushing setup

My pumping setup

Gary in VA

PW, it looks like you're riding one of those setups backwards.  Cool
fuzzydeer

hahaha.

Well it is my truck, so I could have the precise angle at which bearings rattle the most worked into the design!
SoloRider

My pushing setup ind of evolved in an interesting way, I built this deck specifically for bombing garages and learning to slide:

It has a little wedge in the front and a nice low stance. Great fun in the garage, comfortable in a tuck, and easy to slide, unfortunately the deep concave was hell on my back foot over long distances and the four ply construction is way too stiff for comfort.  As I started using the deck more for getting around it became more apparent that I needed a replacement.

This is that replacement:

It's only three plys of bamboo, the middle layer running bias, a layer of 5.7oz 2x2 twill CF top and bottom, and a partial walnut stringer to strengthen the nose and tail.  It has the same drop as the other deck but a more shallow concave and much wider platform.  The slightly softer flex is far more comfortable over the long haul and actually a lot more responsive in the garages too.  The complete weighs 9.63 lbs built up with Paris 180s, Reds, and O-tang In Heats.
JeffVyain

Dervish, 180s, was rockin InHeats, but put some Durians on there and I'll be testing out some lemon big zigs on there soon. Bottom is newspaper clippings and vintage X-men comics covered in clear-coat that a local artist by the name of Mike Graves mustered up for me.
SkateKi

Jeff-
cool board and pic! that rocks.
gboom

I think someone is stealing cable TV. Nice picture. Cool.
JeffVyain

thanks both. i love that board. no cable stealers that i know of. someone ran a really ghetto security camera on the outside of our apartment building. i think it's just for show and doesn't even work.
LDPanda

So, I got a little impulsive this evening  Embarassed  Ive wanted a backup pusher for ultraskates as well as to learn some 'freeride' type tricks on for a while now. Tonight i saw some good deals out there and decided to go for it, heres the new setup:

Kebbek Flushcut
Randal R-II 180 50*
83mm 75a flywheels

It might not be ideal but the price was right for me. Im at least looking forward to trying something new.
LDPanda

Shocked  Cool
wafflesole

is that a kebbeck flushcut? never seen one before. looks like it had lots of plusses for a pusher. whats the length and width on the riding surface?
LDPanda

Yeah, its a Kebbek JimZ Fluscut. Ill have to break out the measuring tape when i get home but its the same width as my Pulse with probably around 35" of usable foot space. I wouldnt suggest it for a taller person as the length feels a bit cramped for my tuck (at 5'10") but I LOVE the concave. Its perfectly flat on the bottom with nice progressive edges, not quite lunchtray concave, more sophisticated than that. At ten plys, it feels solid and FAST, not nearly as heavy as I thought it might be. The flushcut dropthru doesnt really offer any significant advantage over undercut flush (topmounted flush) except that it looks cool (imo). Its got a 1.2 inch drop, making it the same height off the ground as a demonseed (1 inch to match, .2 to make up for the flushcut) but becuase the trucks are mounted within the wood, theres less of the 'hammock' effect, imo.

The one thing im really dissapointed about is the stupid R-II hangars. I havent even spent an hour on this thing and i already bought some Paris hangars (this fluscut is CNC'd for r-II plates only). The new R-IIs are terrible, the bushing seat is oblong instead of round and cant accomidate ANY standard bushing. Let me say that again, the newest run of R-II cannot properly hold ANY standard bushings, not venoms, not abecs, not bennets, not khiros. I have tried everything (and i have a lot of bushings) and not one would fit properly in the seat without spilling out (other than the stock ones it came with). So i guess ill have to wait another week to get this up and running properly. Im a little frustrated by that but its raining here anyway.
Surf One

When I replaced the stock bushings on my R-II trucks with Khiros, I noticed that they didn't quite fit.  Being new to this game I wondered about the 'bushing standard' if there is such a thing.  Now I see there isn't.  But to make them fit snugly I just sanded the sides until the bushings were also oblong.  I've put well over 100 miles on them and they seem to be working fine.  Is this an inappropriate solution?
LDPanda

Not at all, its a perfectly reasonable solution. One could also regrind the hangar to properly accommodate standard bushings. There is somewhat of a bushing standard though, as I have never had a problem like this before with any other truck. While khiros and venoms and abecs differ in size somewhat, theyre all round and they generally fit the same trucks without any special modification. Even oddball bushings like tall bennetts, tracker stims, and JimZ's are round. no bushing im aware of is the shape of the bushing seat in this hangar though. I think its a case of poor quality control and trying to reinvent the wheel. Randal is notorious (to my understanding) for their poor quality control, hence why many people prefer paris for their more finished look. And this oddly shaped seat, i dont know where theyre coming from on that, i guess they feel like they have to do something new to justify the most recent price hike  Rolling Eyes
LDPanda

Ive got my pusher dialed for the ultra now. I was going for as low as possible (without railbite) while still being manueverable enough to avoid the children, joggers, dogs, etc. at Greenlake. Heres how it ended up.

Kebbek JimZ Fluscut
50* Prandals, flipped front and back
85mm 80a SpeedVents
89a ABEC barells bottom, sabre cones top (same front and back but tightened more in the back)

Its pretty darn manueverable for a double drop on flipped hangars. I wish the deck was maybe 2" longer but Ill deal. I shouldnt really need much stability as there are no hills to speak of at greenlake, im much more worried about plowing into some jogger that decides to cross the path without looking.
pavedwave

Here's what's likely my main Ultraskate 8 pushing setup:

The main thing I've done since last time was put double soft wedges stacked on each other with another thin soft wedge in between, like a funky wedge sandwich -- this has helped reduce the vibrations of the carbon rolls significantly.

pavedwave

More tinkering with a "G-Bomb RollsRolls" but I'm pretty sure this experiment is coming apart as fast as I put it together.   The stress on the board is basically going to bust at the sharp transition points, I can see that already from just barely standing on it -- didn't even give it a push.

With the 101 wheels and risers  (and the offset of the bracket)  it bottomed out quickly, so I'd either have to move to more riser, stiffer bracket, or bigger wheels.   But it's inherently a bad idea just because of the angles.

I do have another idea for adding shock absorption to this setup  (without extending the wheelbase) but it will require some machining...
wafflesole

that thing is INSANE!!!!!!!
barefootboarder

I didn't have a pusher for this Ultraskate so I had to borrow one!  Thank you to Pete of Dangerous Decks
for helping me out with this beauty at very short notice.  Laughing

The weathers looking like it's going to be pretty wet so the Mermaid might have to be put aside.
Our path is pretty rough so I'm opting for 75a Gumballs with Holey trucks.
The other boards are a Kebbek and a Lush Spooky with the big wheels, not quite sure which of us will be
riding what at the moment.  I think I might have to fight my boy Jack for the Dangerous Decks set up which is lovely   Laughing
wafflesole

nice set up jo good luck to you on it. get Jack to 50!
pavedwave

Looks like you've got a few setups to choose from Jo.  Nice stuff!

Shock absorption test #2:   My wife's yoga mat just got a little shorter -- nothing like some last minute hacks.    No time for gorilla glue, but duct tape's the shizzle... one of the guys on Skate Across America also used a rubberized mat and said it worked wonders to dampen vibration.    Actually this particular deck was on part of that journey, I picked it up from Kenny Mollica years ago!

After a little test spin in the hood, I think we have a winner.   Just hope the tape holds up!
wafflesole

i know dave used surf grip on his rolls. i ended up using the pocket pistol angled foam to give it some concave.

hope it lasts.
JeffVyain

oooh that mat is great. how'd it work?
pavedwave

The mat worked wonders.   Other than that familiar fatigued feeling throughout my body today, I don't feel injured or hurt at all.   I switched back to the yellow rolls with regular grip tape for a lap, just to compare -- it was a world of difference vibration-wise.   Going to try some new rubberized risers next.

Panda's Flushcut was super comfy too, he's got the bearings dialed and it just felt plush.   Maybe bearings do matter ... nah   Very Happy
LDPanda

Those bearings [biltins] are SHOT by the way. Rather than falling asleep instantly when i got home, i took my enire board apart, every bolt, every bearing, everything, dried it all, sprayed silicon over the whole thing, the works. I did my best with the bearings but they were so rusted i just junked them. Some of them would barely turn even after a full cleaning and new lube. Oh well. The flushcut performed really well for me. Very plush and comfortable, easy to push, fast, manueverable enough to get me out of some tight spots. The wheels got surprisingly beat up, theres a lot of stuff imbeded in them now, lil rocks and pokey whatnots. Lots of little slices in them too. Im surpised becuase the asphalt quality at greenlake is perfect but i guess there was just so much debris on the track. I took two minor falls, one avoidable and one not. Right after it got dark, i went over a pile of leaves that contained a big stick. Never saw it. I rolled out pretty good and walked away with a lil skin lost on my knee and elbow but generally fine. I figured 85's would go over everything but maybe not  Embarassed  The other one was just dumb. There was a big puddle full of leaves id been avoiding all day. Some time very late at night there was a little traffic on the trail and i decided to go thru the puddle rather than wait for them to cross the clear path. Long story short, a pile of leaves about ten inches tall collected in front of my front truck and stopped my board. Got a minor cut on my hand but all in all a pretty injury-free ride. Im really pleased with how the flushcut treated me, ill know next time to use cheaper bearings for rainy days Smile
blake

Biltins are great bearings they roll really nice but they get destroyed by rain really easily. i ride bone reds they hold up to rain alot better then biltins
JeffVyain

I've had the same findings with Biltins. Gotta hate those avoidable falls. I took one late last week that I should've squirmed out of. My tail end slipped out pumping, and while I didn't let it go and fly on my back, once my balance got thrown, for some reason I was committed to coming off of the deck. Ended up falling on my side on a curb. The bruise just worked its way out to the skin today! I hadn't fallen in a month, and since that last week, I've taken two weird falls, both of which somewhat aggravated my ACL sprain. I'll be taking it a little easier for a couple weeks. Gotta remember we're riding squirly boards. It's not so tough to bring them back under your feet and regain lost balance, and it's probably worth it to try, because it seems like once you go down hard once, it takes a little while to get that equilibrium back to 100% again and you tend to go down a little easier next time around.
G- Dub

They probably get destroyed because they failed to put shields on the inside, I wonder who got that bright idea.
