RoeRacing partners with Stoked SkateboardsOk, guys. It's official. RoeRacing has started selling its goods through Stokedskateboards.com. This should provide easy access to a healthy stock of Mermaids. Order up...

Roe couldn't have picked a better partner than Stoked. I've purchased from them several times and have always had a positive experience- plus the prices are great!
Question- I noticed that the weights for the flexes are different than they are on the Roe site. Which is correct?

I've been trying to get the Mermaid flexes tuned more from rider feedback (including my own.) The flexes are posted slightly different right now between Stoked and the Roe site - basically there should be some overlap between them, which denotes that there is definitely preference that comes into play for people who's weight range is "on the fence." Notice there's roughly a 50-lbs range in each flex.
Flex:
Light (under 165 lbs)
Med (150-200 lbs)
Stiff (190-240 lbs)
In other words if you're 160 but you prefer a stiffer flex in general, go Medium. If you're 200 and you prefer a flexier deck, go Medium. Hope this helps and would really like to get more customer feedback from all the decks out there!

would a light flex for a 165lber be OK?

That's exactly what I weigh and ride. Some people feel like it's too flexy for them -- however, I still know very few people who ride significantly long distances on a regular basis. I'm still on a Light flex board from the beginning of 2007 and it feels nearly the same as from the day it was built. One thing I never do is "trampoline" my boards to the ground, this just ages the birch prematurely.

Damn! I could be but a few clicks away from a Roe mermaid! $180 I could afford to spend ... but shouldn't ... but could ... but ...
Ok.
Walking away from the computer. Hoping they're sold out when I come back, of course I will probably be devastated if they are. Ah man. Just ... Argh!
However .. I am selling my complete Dervish to a friend for $150 ..
NO! BACKING AWAY FROM COMPUTER!
EDIT:
I am weak. But now I can bring the girl along for some LDP'ing!

I also weigh 165 and I ordered the medium flex based on the rates posted on the Roe site: Light (under 120 lbs), Med (120-160 lbs), Stiff (160-200 lbs). The new rates are very different. I really want a deck with some flex (but not as much my Flexdex slalom board)- am I gonna have any/enough with the medium flex?...I guess if I wait a few more days until I can actually try it I'll be able to answer my own question.

PM'd you Alan, get in touch after you get on your board a bit. We'll make sure you've got the right ride. Take some comfort knowing 165 is about the 'heaviest' one would want to go with a Light flex...

I went to the Stoked website and under "availability" it says: usually ships in 3-4 business days. Is this for real?
|
pavedwave

Yep, while the boards are in stock, they should ship fast.
Right now there's still a misprint on the slalom PS boards -- they show both "3--4 business days" and "3--4 weeks", which I've alerted the Stoked guys about. But as far as Mermaids (and Cross-Steps) go, they're IN stock at the moment.

OK, your examples are for riders heavier than the flex range, but I'm about 140 lbs. which was just right for the Medium flex board (as advertised on the Roe site), but below the Medium flex on Stoked.
Is the board I'm going to get from Roe going to be way too stiff?
Should I kit it up and try it out, or something else?

My gut tells me that based on feedback from many riders, No -- your board will not feel anything like way too stiff. 165 is what we're now listing as the very TOP weight for a Light flex board. The only way to gauge flex is through overlapping ranges, because on each "fence" there is always a good degree of preference that comes into play. I think you'll be fine, just keep in touch, I'll be waiting to hear what Alan has to say on this as well! -jp

Stoked is my FAVE online skateshop. They have always done me right, now with RoeRacing there I have another excuse to return.
Kudos.

Know how you wake up from a dream and wonder if it was real or not? This one was pretty vivid, so I just jotted down everything in case it is...including jpegs, don't ask how I did that!
"Pre-production speedboard ....
Features: birch ply, 3D vertical laminate aspen/high density foam torsion box core, rubber damping inserts, triaxial glass, carbon fiber.
Consists of 13 individual parts all put together like a puzzle then placed in the mold to be pressed and cured!
Lightweight and stiff as an iron beam with just enough damping to absorb high-frequency vibrations and chatter. Extra glossy carbon fiber finish"

you didn't get to bring it home?
Bummer, but let Gareth know he's got a winner if looks and breeding mean anything.

Now that Stoked is taking care of the business side of things, Gareth has been tinkering a bit more
|
LDPanda

Yeah, its that good. The flex on this deck seems even better than the original. Even though its technically a light flex it felt stable yet bouncy under my 200 lbs. Cant wait until these hit full production.

Huh? Such a tease you two are... more info please!!!

Well, i dont know much more than you do other than the fact that ive ridden it a little bit and james is pretty tight lipped on the issue. From the picture you can see that it is two plys of V-Lam birch and maple. My impression was that it felt more like a medium flex mermaid than a light flex but it seemed to have more 'pop' than either. Same beautiful outline and carbon fiber work as production mermaids.

I noticed that stoked lists the matching seismic rears for the bennett 5.0 and 6.0 (130mm and 155mm respectively) but doesnt list the ST105mm despite the fact that the 4.3 is one of the front options for the mermaid complete. Is this mere oversight or do you seismic users tend to pair the 4.3 with a 130 instead?
|
stocago

I'm guessing it's an accidental omission. Since Stoked stocks the 105, I can't see why they wouldn't offer it for the complete. I've got one, and I actually ran it with a 5.0. There can be some clearance issues with it. For example, with the 76mm Superballs I had to use an extra speedring. Any wheel with a fairly large inner lip could cause problems. I don't think many LDPers run Grippins, but I'd guess they're impossible on a 105.
I'm sure a 130 would run fine with the 4.3, offering perhaps a bit more stabilility, while perhaps sacrificing quicker turning. Flipping the rear wheels would make the tracking narrower, but then there could be the clearance problem.

They don't list a tracker 106 either, which presumably would be the tracker match for a 4.3 bennett. I guess you could run the 130 with a 4.3.....but still I think the 105 seismic and 106 tracker should be options on the menu.

Just finished and handed off the '09 template to Gareth this morning. This design will offer another option in the LDP arsenal, the stance is pulled back a little, giving more power to the rear drive... think Turbo Boost on the long flat stretches. Hopefully a quick turnaround into testing!!

Should be getting a proto soon... here's an early sketch of the difference in stance:
