RoeRacing - Current Order Tracking

EDIT February 2009:

Hi again all.   As has been announced on Silverfish not long ago, RoeRacing has now partnered with Stoked Skateboards, so the original purpose behind this thread of tracking Gareth's direct orders to customers, is moot.    (However, feel free to post shots of your Roe decks here -- with you riding them!!!)

Stoked is now the sole distributor of RoeRacing skateboards -- which means -- they have a continuous stock of Roe boards  (initially just Mermaids and Cross-Steps)   and they will offer his other boards on a built-to-order basis, which will also be faster than before, because the shipping is now automated.

So the wait time for boards in stock is literally measured in just days to a couple weeks now!

Roe's reputation for precise, meticulous, handcrafted boards is highly revered the world over, and Stoked's reputation for great customer service has been established over a very short time.

Congratulations once again to Gareth and Stoked, for combining forces to bring some of the world's greatest performance skateboards FASTER to you!

Cheers
james

=======================

Hi all

I'm starting this thread as a way to help assist paid customers in tracking their orders from RoeRacing.   Understand that I'm not a RoeRacing employee, I do not get paid to do this, and there is only so much I can actually do, but at least having the information all in one place would help me to give Gareth accurate reminders now and then.

But more importantly, this would help me to give reliable feedback to you on the current state and ETA of your order.  I get lost in piles of email just like anyone.

I'm not making this list because the "Roe wait" is so incredibly horrible -- that has been hugely dramatized in the past, when you actually do 1-1 comparisons to other custom board builder wait times.   For example, over summer 2008 people are still waiting longer than 4 months to receive Insect boards.  There is some level of 'outrage', but there's also a big team who "defend" that company at every turn.   RoeRacing never had that kind of support, and Gareth is a very low-key guy.  Still, people wanted to hear something back, and in the event that things take longer than an expected wait time, that's what I intend to attempt to provide here.

In 2008, the Roe turnaround has improved immensely!  And fortunately, some of you have posted some great reviews on your boards.   It's always great to see feedback like this.

Since 2006 Roe and Insect have fully separated their businesses, during which time Gareth has put into place a much faster, more streamlined CNC machine process that gets built-to-order boards in riders and racers hands in a 1-2 month timeframe.

Subsonic Scott (Portland, OR) and LongboardLarry (Salem, OR) really don't need this extra support.  Both of these guys run their custom board building businesses full-time to support their households, and they have fairly predictable turnaround times of between 4--8 weeks.    Gareth's turnaround time has also reached this stage for the most part, though his volumes are much lower.  In times when this might pick up, the timeframes can get longer.  Again, that's why I'm starting this system.

Your input on this thread would be completely voluntary.   So this thread will not necessarily reflect all the boards that are currently in the queue.

All I ask is you post your name, (assuming it's the same name you paid RoeRacing under), and the date that you made payment.   Then I'll keep you apprised when any news from the shop comes my way.

Hope this helps!
James

Sounds Awesome!!! I think I'll be ordering that other Roe board after all....

Awesome James,

I just got a Walkabout from Larry for the Ultra…..Luckily he had one in stock.

After the Race I will contact Gareth for a Mermaid and take care of some of my older business.  I need to do that soon. Great to see everyone is getting a board.

Thanks for the thread man great stuff…

Is it possible to get one from the current batch? If not, anybody know when the next batch is due?
bluebugbuster

Work, watch this thread and wait, skate, watch this thread and wait, try to overcome insomnia, watch this thread...

Anyone know how to kill time?
pavedwave

2 boards arrived in UK, should be out of customs and in Keiths hands soon.

Gareth had issue getting use of the CNC machine last week, so remaining boards should be built this week, but I'm not saying for sure until I get solid word from him.  Once I know the actual numbers I'll let you know galloc if there is an "extra" in your flex (depends on your weight)   I'd be seeing him at the latest this Friday for the Ultraskate and post any news soon as I hear from the shop!
pavedwave

Ok what I know now is the CNC went down, the heating element specifically, so that's getting replaced/rebuilt today, the decks will get pressed early next week, assuming this goes well.

Hopefully this alleviates, more than adds frustration, that's the intent anyway.  It's hard for me to peg an actual "ship" date at this point, but my guess would be end of next week, given the circumstances.

what's your question?

one thing that would help me understanding your wait times is if you post the exact date you paid here on this thread.    then it will be really easy to see in one place if you are waiting 4 weeks or more.    3 weeks would be blazing fast.

incidentally i have a couple requests into Gareth so i'll post anything new soon as I hear back.

thanks

It's been a very quiet week... just know that I'll post whatever comes this way soon as I hear it.    Cheers all.

Here is a heavily-edited email from Gareth, edited because 1. there are certain build-specific details that other board building competitors need not know  and 2. some personal details that are going to stay that way.

======================================
"James-
Here is an update on what is going on:

We just spent $xxxx.xx to rebuild the molds and ... for the press.  This last week has ... been rebuilding the molds and the press to accommodate the new heating system.  ...

I have been working (with unnamed distributor!!) on pricing structure and quantities of boards for delivery.

Existing outstanding orders will be shipped first and should be completed over the weekend if the molds are ready today as was the plan.
David Gray’s deck will be the first one in the mail.  I have Beth’s deck at home if she is still interested.

The shop is committed to increasing the production of boards beyond the current program of a couple at a time.  We've spent a lot of time and money upgrading the presses, ... All in anticipation of the increased workload and deck production. "

======================================

All I'm going to say in closing is this:   Look, if anyone for any reason gets fed up waiting, go ahead and ask for a refund.  Don't go bagging on multiple forums lamenting about your wait.   The only guy I know right now who has waited since July, which I consider way too long, is first on the list and mentioned above.   Gareth is a hardworking guy who does this practically singlehandedly, he skips events he's passionate about like last week's Salem slalom races sometimes, just to make sure this stuff stays on track, AND maintains a full time day job as a mucky-muck in his field -- and I'm doing everything I can right here in this forum to help him spread the most up to date information about what's going on.   So if you would rather own a Sector 9 or Loaded, then go ahead, get your refund, and pick one up right now from your local distributor.    I have no stake in this other than wanting to share the first, and in my opinion best, classic LDP board which Gareth and I created years ago which I know will stand the test of time.

For those who can wait a little longer for a custom board build, I will continue to update here!

Is anyone still as stoked as I am to get one of these gnarly boards? Good gawd, I seriously cannot wait for a board to show up at my door. I guess the worst part is hating myself for expecting it now. These primo setup Bennetts, Airflows and Sieismics really do make lousy paperweights, even with wheels mounted, ready to roll.

Skating now doesn't kill time, rather, inhibits frostbite. There are no heated garages big enough in a small town.

At least I can spend all winter with a handfull of exacto knives, slaving over a sheet of grip, and wait for the weather man to say its no longer wind chill I'd have to worry about.

Nothing like wind in the hair, sunshine on the skin, and urethane rolling on the asphalt. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes.

Hey guys. I just wanted to back up JP on the Roe Mermaid thing. There is big news right around the corner that neither I nor JP can release yet. BIG NEWS! It is going to be awesome for Roe Racing and all involved.

Less wait, more skate!

I have a Mermaid and can tell you, it is worth waiting for...

So, now I have two setups ready for my board. I've got a black bennett 5.0 and a silver 6.0, an RTS 129mm, and a Seismic stable 130. Ive also got two ready to roll sets of wheels and a box half full of my favorite bushings, the other half hardware and wedges.

I think if my mermaid doesn't show up, i'm gonna go bankrupt. because maybe, just maybe, I might actually get a bennett 4.3 and an airflow.

Why? Because it burns. That money is so hot in my pocket, it melts the snow. Literally.

I think I'm patient. But they say patience is a virtue. Does it look like I can afford virtues? Now let me drink my rockstar 1 liter bottle, and shake like an over caffinated monkee, in the corner.

Hi James,

I ordered my board on the 1st September under the name Nicholas Jackson.

I completely understand the long lead time for the boards and I don't mind waiting as everything I have heard about Roe boards is that they are fantastic.  Non the less I am itching to ride this thing and any updates will be fantastic.  I also need to pay the additional shipping for UK my order is domestic only.

It's his own fault, if he didn't build great boards we wouldn't be in such a rush to get them Smile

Many Thanks,

Nic

Hey Nic

Once I see that July order of Dale Gray's gets done I would expect that will be the same group of decks that takes care of most others.   There aren't really a ton of orders to speak of -- it's mainly that he had some process problem with the CNC.

I'll definitely post anything I get back from Gareth when he fills me in, I'm waiting a few days now since my last email!!

Ian the Groove Worshipper

Hello,

I'm new to the forum...a 33yo who hadn't skated for about 13 years until the other day I tried a friend's Vanguard, carved a few lines in the parking lot, and instantly was hooked so bad I bought a Pintail the following day.   I can pump it, yet after finding this page I was convinced I need to find the most efficient set up.   I ordered a Mermaid on 11/28, and I haven't heard anything from Gareth yet.   My name is Ian Tilp.

Thanks for this awesome webpage.  I expect this sport to blow up.
pavedwave

hey ian, if there's anything else on the order or questions you want to communicate, shoot me a PM or mail at pavedwave @ comcast dot net and I'll make sure he gets it.    i should be out at the shop this weekend.    welcome back!

Well I just got a note from Dave that he got his board this Monday ( 12.1.08 ) so that hopefully bodes well for the rest.   His was the longest being 4-5 months out.

"Yes, I got my mermaid on Monday.  It's beautiful."

I'll drop more details here if I get any news this weekend.

Here's a bit of what I can say, there are also some new developments that I have to wait to say, good stuff though!!   Smile

From the Gareth-wires:

"I've got all the back-order decks pressed and shaping the last of them
right now. I will have them done end of day tomorrow.  I will get
them in the mail as soon as I am physically able - for sure by the end
of the week.  ( 12.12.08 )"

Email today  (Sunday)  from da man

"...boxing up as many as I can tonight for shipping tomorrow.  The
remainder will get shipped on Tuesday...."
Nicholas Jackson

Hi,

Can't wait to get my mermaid its gonna be better than Christmas.  However I live in the UK I'm fairly certain I have to pay a little more for shipping.  Could you ask Gareth to blast me an email with the additional money I owe for shipping.  I will pay pal this straight away.

Many Thanks,

Nic
bluebugbuster

Does anyone know if these are in the mail yet? JP?

Or are they gonna be shipped out a little later, after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? Say, the first week of January?

I've been waiting for all the mail delivery dudes with open arms, but all they ssem to bring are bills and other longboard parts. They must hate me...

EDIT:

I was leaving the apartment on my lunchbreak, and the USPS dude pulled up, and had my mermaid! Freakin Sweet! It's sitting securely in the trunk of my car!

always good to hear this!!   in fact, I really hope people will shoot me a line when they DO get their boards.

hearing back from all of you, gives me a chance to get a really clear view on ACTUAL timelines, to counter some of the blatant falsehoods that are being posted on silverfish  (by suspicious individuals who never actually respond when I directly contact them....)   -- and more importantly, to have intelligent conversations with Gareth on timelines and process improvements.

it'll be even better to hear your reviews and riding impressions...though I know we might have to wait for a spring thaw or the off-chance random parking garage session.

and Nic, we've followed up in emails about the UK shipping.  One thing I forgot to mention is that sometimes Gareth will simply ship first, then ask for payment later.  Or completely forget to   Very Happy    Chances are it's already on the way to you, just let me know if you hear (or receive!)  anything before I do.    Cheers.  jp
Nicholas Jackson

I received my board this morning and it is beautiful, well worth the wait and I can't wait to ride it.

However still waiting for my trucks and they are coming from Cornwall down the road Smile

Now fishing through my skating parts I'm starting to wonder if I can cobble together a setup using an Indy 169 rear and a 139 front. Damn this board is too good to be sitting in my living room.  It's winter in England but  the roads are dry, I have a mermaid and cant ride it, what kind of crazy torture is this Smile

Pre-empted Gareth, I have Paypaled him the difference in shipping.

Have a Merry Christmas and happy pumping.

I ordered a Mermaid last week

James,

My name is Alan Schmidt in Bakersfield CA. I ordered a Mermaid last week but I haven't seen a confirmation of the order from Roe or paypal.

BTW, I ordered the medium flex and the low camber shape. (I assume the low camber shape will be a flatter board than the camber-concave...is that correct?).

Thanks for your help!!!

-Alan
pavedwave

Nic once again thanks for keeping in touch, great to hear your report!  I think you posted some impressions on another thread?  I'll look for that again...

And Alan, I dropped a note to Gareth and will let you know, I'm sure the order's in, sometimes the Roe site is quirky on confirmations  (something I still need to try fixing / researching on the Paypal side)     and yep, the low camber will be flatter across the width of the deck, the concave edges are up just a little higher, hopefully that's what you're after!
sushiking

Hi James.  Just ordered a mermaid.  Very excited after reading all the great comments on this site!
After reading your last post to Alan, I'm thinking I want to change to the flatter model.  My order, placed yesterday, was for a med/concave/camber.  Is it possible to make a change at this point to a med/low camber???   If not, I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever I get.

Thanks, Ed Kang - Maryland
aschmidt

James, it would be very helpful to see photos (frontal and side views) of the two decks side by side...have I missed them somewhere? I'm kinda thinking that I'd prefer the board with less concave but just depends on the amount of camber it has. Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!

-Alan
pavedwave

Okay here's what I just got, it doesn't answer your question about changing to the camber-only deck Ed, but I'll let you know what I hear back on that soon, hopefully, as well as who's this week vs. next week.

Gareth's note (in bold) refers to these four

>> - alan schmidt
>> - ed kang
>> - david miao
>> - ian tilp

"Two are done and will ship this week. Others will be done and ship next week.  I am at work and don't know which ones are done now off the top of my head."

And Alan if it helps some, the concave is very, very gradual.  The camber too, for that matter.   So the combination of the two has a really nice strengthening effect over such a long board, without making it too stiff / unresponsive -- assuming the flex is right for your weight.

Cheers
pavedwave

Aright, got some rapid fire responses, so the gist on the camber-concave is that Gareth is trying to get the line and process more streamlined, and since the actual requests for camber-only had dwindled to a trickle, he's just doing the camber-concave nowadays.    Expect some web updates very soon to reflect this!    Cheers  -jp
aschmidt

Thanks for the info James.
sushiking

That's good info.

Hey, if changing to the camber-only deck is going to slow up the process, I'll take whatever Gareth's making...  Thanks!
pavedwave

He's only doing camber-concave now.   The requests for camber-only were so few, so he streamlined his process, I just need to pull that option off his site.   Cheers!
nochipseal

James,
I have been wanting to get a Roe Mermaid from Gareth for over a half a year, but have been holding off until production became more routine.  Is this a better time than before to place an order and to expect delivery in nine weeks?  Is the CNC Machine and other equipment running more smoothly than previous times? Thanks
pavedwave

nochipseal is a great philosophy!    Very Happy   welcome.

The distributor thing is coming together fast, a matter of weeks or even less at this point.  I'm confident enough to say that you might hold off ordering through the Roe site right now, and wait for this!  This thread is where I'll post it when it goes "live."
nochipseal

Thanks James,
I'll check back periodically and order when the distributor has been established.  I've come to the conclusion that the Roe Mermaid is still the LDP for me, regardless of subsequent LDPs recently introduced by other manufacturers.

This above was Gareth's report 1.7.09, and I just spoke with him tonight.  Only one of those three decks above shipped last week  (I don't know whose yet, he called me from his car...)  so the other three are still in limbo.   That's not the positive news I wanted to report but I just want to keep things current and communicated, above all.

I'll update with something more meaningful  (hopefully later tonight) we're supposed to talk again, and hopefully I'll be updating the Roe site to pull down all the prices in getting ready for his distributor launch.

I've been anxiously waiting for the delivery but had a feeling something was up since it wasn't here yet...oh well, I now have the rest of the board ready to go once it arrives.

Thanks Alan, I'm hoping for good news as well.

I updated the site last night, the board line is pared down to the most popular, and the $ links will be updated once the distro is ready.

LovethePump

Yup, got mine shoftly after calling Gareth and mentioning the March Ultraskate on his voicemail. Coincidence? Dunno. Waited about 2-3 months by my recollection.

It's customary at this point to say how stoked one is. Well, I can't buck the trend: I LOVE THIS BOARD. It has become my primary means of commuting around town. Got the medium flex even though I'm 185 as I like a bit of flex, perhaps from riding so many Loadeds. Super responsive, and I love that I can pump *up* hills now. And yes, it's gorgeous, too.
aschmidt

Got mine Friday and took it out for a quick ten mile ride yesterday and I agree with LovethePump, the Mermaid is an amazing board. Now I need to learn how to pump it- very different than the Galac deck I've pretty much learned on. Also, James, the medium flex feels really good. It takes me back to seventh grade when I was riding my Fibreflex cutaway slalom board with Trackers and Road Rider Henry Hester wheels...

-Alan
pavedwave

Nice. So good to hear this!    And glad to hear the flex works for you Alan.

I hope to keep hearing more flex impressions coupled with your weight and preferences.   Communicating desired flex can be one of the trickiest things to nail down.

Mermaid in Transit

Seems like the last status check on the shipment still had it in CA.  Arrives in MN early next week.  LDP snowboarding on a Mermaid?  Some of the streets are clear - rode the slalom board down the local hill last Friday.  Have most of the parts ready to build it.  Pictures will be posted.

I tried the light flex. I weigh 155 pounds. I thought this would round out my LDP selection nicely. I already have a medium flex Pulse and a stiff flex Slippery Skates LDP deck. When I first got on the Mermaid I thought it was too flexy (Loaded  Wink ), but as I've spent some more time on it I believe that it's my most versatile deck. I use almost the whole board and move my feet to vary the flex and its effect. On my other boards I'd pretty much keep my back foot in the middle trying to extract some pop. I still believe that the stiffer decks feel faster and that I'm able to put more power down, but I won't know for sure until I've done a Cyber Mile. Smile These are just my initial impressions and I have so many more miles to put in before I can really give a fair review.

Initial setup is: Bennett 5.0 front, Seismic S-T 130 rear with BigZigs.
LDPanda

am i having a stroke or did you dye your big zigs? if so, did you use the fabric dye method? ive been thinking about dying wheels but im afraid the heat might mess with the quality of the urethane.

Edit:  I <3 the hourglass bushing as a toestop, lets you get upwards leverage on the deck.
stocago

Yep, I had a t-shirt that I wanted to dye black, so I threw in the wheels as well! They feel faster and grip better, too. I used the Rit powder, stovetop method, but never let it boil. I actually removed the pot from the heat and let them sit for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then after letting them cool and examining them carefully I decided to throw them back in the dye for 30 more minutes. I think it's impossible to mess up with black.

Holey smokes are my favorite toestops.
stocago

Okay, I was wrong. I did a cyber mile on my usual, proven test track and did a personal best. It was a modest two-second improvement, but an improvement nontheless. It's surprising to me, as I thought some power and speed would be lost in the flex of the deck. The setup was comparable with past setups.  My Roe Mermaid is fun, flexy and fast.
heyburt

First Setup and Run

So I ordered just enough parts to build a first setup.  I believe I will need to fine tune the setup but the first few runs have been enjoyable.  I even had to hire a guard dog to keep the new prize safe.  More updates as I get feedback on the setup and place a follow up order for parts.

I am also looking for feedback on my stance based upon the wet spots on the board from my session today.  One good thing about snow and cold is it can document where you place your feet on a board.

In training for the March 21 ultra.

LDPanda

Is that second picture of the front of your deck? It looks like you have your bennett dewedged instead of wedged. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, the skinny part of your wedges should always face forward, towards the nose of your deck. Other than that it looks like a great setup, i jealous of your super soft black ops. Foot position looks good to me for a higher speed more invested pump; for a more energy saving pump (like you might use on the ultra) i would move my feet a little further forwards so that your front foot is on the bolts and your rear foot is closer to the widest part of the hips.
