Pushing records?

Who keeps track of pushing speed records.  I know there is something about a  record attempt at a cycle track? what is the current record for a flat 1000 meter?
Why do I keep asking questions?

OK I just looked at the cyber mile section of the website.  I should have looked a little more before posting.  But aside from this site does any other body keep track of these stats?  I was thinking that the IHPVA
International Human power vehicle association might be interested and they are a recognized international governing body.

I'd be interested in this. I like to ldp, but i love flat out push racing. It appears that i have the 1 mile and 5 mile record. The only thing i can conclude from that is that no-body else pushes these distances. Rolling Eyes

Btw - the "Cyber Mile" doesn't discriminate.   The rules state that a skateboard must be used, the course must be flat, and whether you pump or push or combine the two is entirely up to the skater.    I expect riders will add in the description whether their attempt was all pump, all push, or both.

I can only conclude you have scared the pushers with your times Nat  Very Happy

I'm hoping to see Robin "The Leg" McGuirk and Dave Mitchell do this for that very reason... come on fellas!

I could do my time Although a mile is a short distance. I doubt the push racers would fare the best at such distances because 1 mile is a tiny sprint compared to the 16 mile(ish) courses we're all used to.

I pushed 2.2 kph in 5:53 That includes a crash and I didn't get up very quickly.
that is around 3.65 minutes averaged over a mile... if my math is correct.

I need to do the cyber mile on my local velodrome, I bet I can do much better!
Is it true people are pulling 16.9 miles per hour doing LDP!?!? I'm not even close to doing that on my LDP board!

Actually I think one reason why the pump records still dominate the cyber mile is because of the level of fitness of people working up their flatland pump rides to 15-20 miles rides consistently.

Most of the pusher races I've seen in the Northwest in the 8--12 mile range  (rarely do they get much longer) include a lot of gravity, which requires a whole different set of respectable skills, but not much aerobic capacity.   Even a subtle amount of gravity makes a HUGE difference when measuring a short distance like a mile.  The few guys that dominate the push race podium spots -- Robin McGuirk, Dave Mitchell, et al -- are the ones I think could do well on the mile.

The rest of the crowd will get a renewed perspective on speed when they find out that pushing 15mph on absolutely flatland course is not trivial.

To date, I've had people submit "push or pump or both" in their notes, but I've updated the Mile page to put that in its own column now.

If you can't find a loop track, check out the course specs, skate 2 measured miles A--B, B--A, and average!

I'm actualy pretty closely matched with robskey, he usually only beats me by a board length and he tells me I make him work harder than most push races. I also have a velodrome made of concrete (dose that count?] I could do a ciber mile for you in the next few weeks and then again after I've warmed up to the season.

I must say, I disagree with your theory slightly as to why pumpers fair better than pushers. Most skaters even on flat courses (which are in abundance where I come from] skate only short distances of a few miles every day where you LDPers and I might go for ten to 2 miles. I also run alot at 3.1-7 miles usually 4 times a week (thats the equivalent of 16 to 2O miles on a skateboard for sure. Infact I do many jaunts over 61 miles in a year.
I train my body for short endurance. whereas one mile is a sprint. The same reason a 5OOO meter race is not won by the same person who wins a 1OO meter dash. The problem here is that only endurance types frequent your site. I think people like douglas da silva from brasil would have the fastest time with only a weeks practice. maybe im wrong. if I am I should be able to beat my above estimated time by quite abit.
In fact In the past I have lost to robskey because he was better conditioned to the ten mile race we were doing where I was adjusted to do 7O to 12O miles in a go. This year I am focusing on my short track. haha well see what happens. Robs mental edge and race experience is unmatched.

I really need to get pumping s fast as I can push. That would be amazing!!!
I cant seem to get above 14mph and I need to work really hard to get there. I know I am as fit as the next guy, its likley a combination of poor technique and board setup.
(I pump like I'm doing tight slalom]

BTW this is Paul Kent I'm the Canadian push guy. I'm gaining experience trying to gain the skill (thats more importaint than fitness at this point) to beat Robin and Caspar. Caspar is from the east coast he used to be on the USA olympic cross country ski team and he now focuses on push races. They are the two most notorious pushers in north america. I've been able to hold my own against canadians but I have yet to go up agains caspar and robskey has always just beaten me by a small margin.
We need more people like them, to make the sport a serious competition. Sometimes I feel like I'm cheating when I show up to push races in bc because the other guys don't know anything about endurance sports where I used to be a runner. Thankfully Rob shows up for most of those to give me me a fair share of humility.

I think it might be because the cyber mile is the brain child of JP and is promoted and recorded here on Pavedwave.  I think this site understandably has a bit of a pump bias.  We get more pumpers than pushers here, I'd imagine.  If we had a more even representation of pushers and pumpers I'd expect to see the times of the best pumpers and pushers to be pretty close.  I'm not sure, but the pushers might even surpass the best pumpers.....could be wrong on that.  It remains to be seen.

The current cyber mile champ Derek Munson has a long distance running background as well, I believe.  Even so his record was all pump, no push.
The most active skaters pursuing the cyber mile record right now seem to be Ian and stocago.  They are rapidly approaching the record.  I believe they only pump their cyber mile attempts.

Would be great to see you and Robin post some cyber mile times.  Maybe try the push and pump and see whats faster for you.

I'm really excited to see someone break the 3 minute cyber skateboard mile mark.

All Hail the King. Note Paul's previous posts down here with the PUSHERS.

Congrats Paul.

I have been thinking of your 245 mile accomplishment and you have renewed my love and respect for the push. While pumping is a wonderful thing that I appreciate more everyday...the simple elegance of the push just got thrown right back at us thanks to YOU.

TWO bombs to drop:

After much GPS-ing (usually a backup plan to lap counting, in this case we had to go the other way around)  ... we're going to note Paul's record as being officially 250.4 miles.

Easier to remember is a straight 250 -- but there you have it!

Here's the other one... A new 5-miler pump record  Smile   I've been sitting on this for over a week.  Sorry Greg!

I might give a cyber mile a go for VO2max training.
We'll see if I can drop 10 seconds or so and match Munson.

I'm going to rape that cyber mile record sometime later this fall. It's gonna be a forceful, nasty raping. To myself, mostly.

I love the fact that everyone killing these events are former XC guys. We some pavement killas.
fuzzydeer

XC running, then I started racing speedboard events, throw it together and you get whatever the hell I am!

Jeff, if you haven't hit this record time yet, I would not be surprised at all.   What I've found and heard from others is that same thing, there's a little "wall" around the 3:45-mark...as is true with most any sprint sport.   You bust through that, and probably another "wall" at 3:40, 3:35, and so on.

I could see a concentrated effort on setting / breaking a new Cyber Mile to take a few months of focus and training.    But I know at least a couple sponsors that have shown interest in supporting a "best" mile-time event, including schwag and cold-hard CASH for the record-breaker.    Considering the higher stakes, the course and conditions would have to be very regulation -- like multiple independent timers and a well-measured and witnessed course beforehand, logistics like that.

So I'm just starting to gauge interest on holding something locally for this, like the Redmond Velodrome... possibly spring 2010?
JeffVyain

I sort of tentatively broke it a while back before I sprained my knee. It was all-pushing though, and the "course" was slightly downhill. To be fair, though, the pavement (bike trail) wasn't all that great and I might be a little faster in the city. I went back out to the same trail and did a 3:48 mile and a 7:56 2-mile combined push/pump 2 weeks ago before I caught this god for saken swine flu. I think I can still break that record doing 100% pushing soon, but I think combining pushing and pumping over longer distances will equate to some more interesting races. I definitely don't have the same kind of strength Munson had doing 100% pumping though...not yet. Just keeping 15mph over a mile is quite a task.
