Professors of pump needed on line two?

OK...I got my walkabout. Stayed up until 2:30am assembling it. After many hours second guessing myself I finally got it built. First off I accidentally ordered lemon/lime combo in 66mm instead of the Big Zigs I was intending. Up front I'm using a orange/white/orange combo on Bennet 5.0. Rear I've got Rts 129mm with all Red khiros. At first I left it as loose as I could (as I thought I was supposed to do), First pump down the street and WHAM! I was tossed to the ground like a sack of potatoes. My other decks have been cutaways and I thought wheel bite would be like that of a pool deck. Nope. It was like a three inch wall. La De Da then I'm suddenly weightless on my way to the pavement. I tightened them down and that seems to have worked. Next, on the second block I snap both front rear hardware bolts within 15 feet. I installed two more and broke one in about 15 blocks. Someone help me with finding a good starting setup. I've got  the wedge kit and 1/4" soft risers along with soft angled all Khiro. Front wedge is a soft wedge and a 7degree hard wedge. The rear de-wedge wound up being 1/4 shock pad,5 degree hard riser, 3 deg., reverse 2 deg. and 1 degree which I beleive comes out to 7 degree rear wedge.

Are 66mms too small? Can someone help me setup my board?
I weigh 160-170lbs. if that helps. I just want to do everything possible to achieve that everlasting pump I keep hearing about. I'm stoked FOR you.
I can pump and sustain for a few blocks but I really want to accelerate and regain momentum. I know that comes with practice but I fear my lack of knowledge might hinder me more than help. This forum consists of the Jedi of LDP. And to some like me, your insights are priceless.

Attached are some pics in case it helps any of you to help me get that perfect setup.

"I snap both front rear hardware bolts within 15 feet. I installed two more and broke one in about 15 blocks"

This sounds very odd? Confused

First Questions would be - Are the Khiro Bolts-hardware.

Next how tight did you tighten them down.  But for it to snap that fast it would have to be alot. (I've never done it)

When you screwed the nut on did you hold the screw driver in one position? Screw it from the nut end.

Wheel bite - if when you pull the wheel by hand to your deck.  If it's real close by hand - it's too close.  By the time your bushings break in you will get wheel bite.

Wedging - I'm finding it's a personal thing. I seem to change angles daily.  Only with my front truk though.  But I generally like it with the 10% on the front.  7 is too carvy for me.  10 will help your wheel bite problem.  I find it gives me a little a both.  (Pump and Carve)

Yes it was the Khiro 3 inchers. I know they're long but I thought I was getting the BigZigs. I don't think I tightened them down too tight. and the second time I made sure if it. I still broke one though. I have two bolts left so we'll see. If there is anything to improve my set up I'd appreciate it. will my 66mms be acceptable?

66mm may be a problem, but should not relate to the problems you have had already....

I find even with 71mm wheels that if I don't go over a bump perfectly, the bolt on my Bennett catches the bump and scrapes or just stops the board.  (I was running 6.0's, so the 5.0's may be different, i don't know.)

To cure the kingping drag problem, either go with less wedge or bigger wheels.

Fine, the Bigzigs are coming off the Dervish. Now I need proper wedging instructions with the new setup. Should I alter my current configuration? Add more height maybe?
edp_swakakin

Your DERVISH????  No No don't touch your Dervish... Razz   jk

BigZigs are my wheel of choice.

If your on primo pavement = lemons

Not so good = Limes  (I see in you pic you mixed them - thats good too)

If all you want to do is pump hit it with 15% in front.

If you want to kick in some crosssteps - 10 % in front.

Not that you can't with 15 but 10 is easier... 15 will have a faster return to center.

If your looking like you might get wheel bite through in an extra shock pad.

WHAT THE EFF?  I put the BigZigs on the walkabout, re-wedged, and left turn snap, right turn snap. That makes five broken bolts on day one. This time I was even more careful than the last two times when installing the hardware. Now I've run out of bolts and the Chicago skate shops only sell up to 1 1/8" bolts. Could it be because I am now using 1/4 shock pad, under a Khiro soft wedge, under a Khiro hard 10 degree wedge riser? Do I need all hard wedges? Did I get defective bolts? I'm 5'8" 162 lbs. so i don't think it's me. These were the first jump on your board and turn type carve not a pump of even a hard carve. Left turn pop, right turn pop....stumped. Also, is there an alternative to Khiro or some other bolts I can acquire other than waiting for UPS again?
edp_swakakin

Dude - I'm stumped.  I use my bolts over and over again.  I'm constantly changing my wedge angle.  I'm about 185 pounds and I have never broken a bolt.  And I rage on my stuff heavily.  Maybe you did get a bad batch but man that seems highly unlikely from khiro.  Khiro sup post to be one of the best for hardware.   And I can't think of why the board would pop the bolts.

Is there anyone out here that has popped bolts like this???   Lets help our new friend out!!!!

Here is my setup - I really feel for you on this one... Confused

gldsndz

I have never popped bolts ( i'm 5'7", 160), I do seem to strip the heck out of the khiro bolts though everytime I screw them in, so I do not hold them in high regard.

and speaking of the stripping, maybe it's me... how tight are you suppose to tighten the hardware?  I try to tighten it as much as I can manage.
VANILLA GUERILLA

edp great photo. Your setup is real close to mine. The exception is I have 1/4 shock under my soft wedge and no upper 1-2 degree wedge. I thought maybe the soft wedge was making the truck flex, but it looks like a lot of you guys run it the same way. Now I'm super stumped because I barely put any pressure on it when they snapped this last time. Could it be the angle of the riser adding too much side torsion to the bolt popping the head off? Should I pre bend or modify the truck or deck holes in anyway? (I don't think so but who knows). Maybe I'm missing something. And why would it only be those two bolts? (rear bolts of front truck) Over and over. All the other bolts are fine and the 2 three inchers in the back haven't popped. It does look like there would be some heavy strain on those two though. It looks like with the wedging the front truck wants to pull away at the rear from the deck. And the next turn after the second bolt breaking this last time the truck did indeed peel off the deck pulling the headless bolts halfway through the board.
edp_swakakin

Once you put the truk  on the first time your bolts will bend.  After that as you can see in the video you don't even have to hold a screw driver on the other side. (But you might)  Hopefully this will give you a good feel on how tight I make them.  But after you ride it you will most likely need to retighten them again.  Generally I always check but if it's snug already I do not tighten it more.  But I can't imagine you doing it even more than what is shown.  Iduno but I hope this helps....Sorry About the lighting.  If you click on the video and go to youtube to make it full screen it looks a bit better.

EDP....The Man!  I am not crazy after all. I did exactly what you did. And each time used less and less pressure to the point where I would snug em a little and back off. Nice flex shot showing me exactly how loose you run the trucks. I'm writing it off as freak hardware and scouring the city tomorrow for    the nicest set of bolts I can dig up. Home Depot or Menard's to start. Hopefully they have something for me because I don't want to wait for any more mail order when I've got my brand new deck two bolts short of a session. Thanks for everything

I use the following because at 190, wheelbite with BZs was a bitch on my hip and shoulder:

Front wedging--1/4 inch shock pad, 1/2 soft angled, 15 degree (biggest wedge from kit).  Total of 20 degrees wedging in front.  NO wheelbite with the 1/4 inch shock pad.

Rear--1/4 inch shock pad, 1/2 soft angled, 7 degree wedged (3rd largest in kit).  Total of 12 degree dewedging in the rear.

Rear truck, tight.  It will still move, but I have a hard time moving it with my hands.

Front truck, semi-tight.

I have really strong legs, so I prefer a tighter set up for pumping up speed and such.  Since I can squat leg left 435 pounds, having a "looser" front truck just allows me to nail the wheels with the board when pumping.  I've had to learn to lean off of that problem.
VANILLA GUERILLA

Thank you soo much everyone. I found some crappy bolts at the hardware store, dialed in my set up as shown by edp's wonderful video.  Went out today raged for a couple miles. And now I am proud to say I can pump indefinitely even against wind. The feeling is beyond words. I live in the third largest city in America and I've only ever seen a couple people on longboards so it's a real big treat to fly down the road then out of sight without ever touching foot. swerving through cars and timing traffic lights. The world is now my go kart track. edp...parson....gldsndz....Big ups to you Gentlemen and some day I hope to LDP along side you someplace...somewhere.
edp_swakakin

Always a pleasure!  You still might check into some better bolts though.  I would say Khiro but Iduno now.  Maybe it was just a bad set.  Anyways becareful and have fun.  It only gets better from here (Trust Me!)

Yep-  James Peters started something very special with "LDP"

Thanks again JP....
