Pavedwave / Skatefurther / Boardfree 24-hour Ultraskate IVUltraskate IV
--------------------------------
Saturday, June 14th, we're starting on the same day, though slightly different start times worldwide.
The SkateFurther and BoardFree guys will begin in Dulwich Park, London, at 8 a.m. their time, which is midnight on the US West Coast. They skate over to Hyde Park for the night hours and finish up there.
Nat and Ben Hall are going to skate the loop at Dorney Park in the UK, probably the best conditions of all our courses.
Trevor Gibson will start at 8 a.m. in San Diego Saturday morning.
The SEATTLE Crew will also start at 8 a.m. from Gasworks Park, Seattle, in front of Urban Surf.
Check the Ultraskate III thread for a bunch of pictures of the Burke-Sammamish trail, and COME PREPARED with lots of water and snacks that you can stand eating over a long period of time. A small backpack or camelback type pack is best!!
http://pavedwave.myfastforum.org/about20.html
Before the start, we'll call the U.K. and see how they're doing. If they're really blasting the miles and way ahead of what we've ever done in the past, then we're changing the course: we'll simply board to the nearest pub, and spend the rest of the day drinking, boarding to as many bars as we can in a 24-hour period, and call them on the cell now and then for updates. No drinking and driving!
The list of 24-hour riders has definitely expanded now with the active and growing UK distance scene! So far committed to the 14th are pictured as severed heads on the map: Nat Halliday, Bam Bam, and Keith O'Leary are now committed and undergoing the prerequisite psychiatric evaluation.
Of all the questions people ask about last year's two ultraskates, the one that always comes first, is - Why???
1. FUN
2. A PERSONAL CHALLENGE (Set your own goal and push your limits!)
3. GOOD FOR BODY AND SOUL
4. TO EXORCISE DEMONS
5. IN CASE AN INSANITY DEFENSE IS EVER NEEDED
6. ENDORPHINS!!
7. A GOOD EXCUSE TO RIDE AFTER MIDNIGHT
8. TO SUPPORT OUR CHARITIES - LIVESTRONG & LOWE SYNDROME / BOARDFREE

Heavy rain / wet conditions will postpone Seattle's June 14th ride to a subsequent weekend. Some showers, I can easily handle, but on our May 3rd Ultraskate III, we blasted right through more than half a day of heavy rain, followed by showers into the evening, then wet asphalt almost the remainder of the time, and it was...painfully interesting. I can now say "Been there, done that." On the other hand, if there are other riders here who want to tough it out, I'll be happy to pull up a lawn chair and provide 24-hour support with a smile

Haha!!
Have faith man, the weather folks are usually so wrong when they try to predict a week ahead. The NW weather has been bipolar lately, however.
We'll keep the start time a little bit looser this time. We'll still shoot for the 8 a.m. start, but if it's particularly nasty (like May's ride) I'm open to waiting a bit and waiting for the dry-up, depending on the rest of the day's forecast.
A reminder on LOGISTICS
Ted - Sheldon - Eric - Keito - and anyone else doing the FULL 24 here starting from Gasworks.... you guys are ready for TWO 50-mile stints of the Burke Gilman right? What that means is a lot more support comes from you, you, and you, since we won't have the luxury of the GreenLake loop, having the chance to "pit stop" every few miles.
Hydration, energy bars, other snack foods in your pouch and maybe at your car parked at Gasworks. A skate tool, extra bushings for any mishaps. We all gotta think ahead a little more on this one! There's not much out there on the Eastside in the way of small markets or stops along the trail.

Right back to you Keith and rest of the crew! You'll be snoozing 8 hours ahead of us, so rest up and good luck!
Rodrigo Gonzales and John Galac at the very last minute assembled a small crew down in San Diego and are skating the Silver Strand, an 11-mile stretch surrounded by water, it looks awesome! I think John even got Trader Joe's to sponsor them.
Trevor who originally planned on San Diego, is now in Denver CO at a killer 2.6-mile loop in Washington Park.
In the Northwest we just ask for DRY, and it's looking good so far.
Eric's just texted me, his flight was overbooked so he'll be in Seattle late this afternoon.
Barefoot Ted arrived from SoCal yesterday, and he's amped. Check out his blog www.barefootted.com where he's been getting mentally and physically psyched for this.
Sheldon is smiling, even in email.
Keito is hoping to catch an early morning bus down from Marysville and join us at Gasworks.
And there's a crew of a few others from the forum on northwestlongboarding.com that sound like they're ready to do it as well, so we'll see them at the start.
Last note...
People have been mailing about my "race" strategy for this weekend, these last few days, and whether the world record will stand, etc.,
Here's the scoop -- I'm going into this weekend with no huge expectations of miles. After that nasty push through the rain some weeks ago, I want to PUMP for a change, at my pace, whatever it may be that day, and have some fun. My personal goal is still to see how well I can do by mostly pumping. Don't want to pound my feet this time. There will be inclines to push, but pumping everything else, assuming it stays dry.
Barefoot Ted has given me some great input on sustainable, injury-free running (which translates well into skating) and that's where my head's always been with LDP -- pumping makes the distances fly by. I'm not sure yet whether the pump can be done quite as energy efficient as the long, powerful alternating switch between push and glide, push and glide, but this is a quest to find out, and I won't be disappointed either way. In fact, this ride I already know will be far more enjoyable than the last.
I know Nat's pretty confident about crushing the record, and that is awesome -- in fact, my prediction for him is precisely 226.43 miles The ultra is all about where your head is for that single day, and what your personal goals are. The fact that there are now 12 or more riders committed to the full 24 hours has already made this race for me. One thing I hope is to travel abroad to a future one -- Dorney Lake over in the UK looks like a Flat Magic Carpet ride and I would love to try it there sometime. One of these years perhaps!

confident about crushing the record! where did that come from?
sheesh i'm gonna be stoked if i get thorugh the 24 hours alive. It's going to be epic skating along knowing the sun is going to be rising in a few minutes. A totally new skating experience.
As for records, im just gonna skate at my pace, knowing that i have got half a dozen other skaters doing the same thing, in the same mindset as me.
it makes me smile thinking about it.
Ben is on his way here, we are going to eat well tonight, sleep and then drive to dorney.
i have got to get my shit together and then try to sleep. im a tad excited.
To everyone, wherever you are, good luck.

hehe, i can just feeeeeeel it from over here. you exude confidence my friend. that, and a little birdy did mention some estimates in the 220 region... maybe that was Eric? seriously, i think you're set, and you've chosen one of the best places imaginable for this.
I don't even know who all's showing up at our start line, but it sounds like there's some others thinking about the full 24.
I'd better get to work! 2062769892 is my cel. I'm not going to check my messages as much, but texting might be more do-able this time.
Try to get some sleep Nat Keith Ben Bam Dave and hope to connect with you maybe even while we're out there!

That is awesome fellas. Respect to you all for taking this on and evolving what we do.
Just back from breakfast and about to conk out, we had a great support crew the whole time, a very busy Greenlake and University of Washington graduation weekend. Regardless, many miles were clocked, and the preliminary tally in Seattle comes to:
Barefoot Ted - 242 miles - A New World Record!!!
Eric Lowell - 187m - Ended his ride in early morning. Long story, I'll let him tell it Stoked to be able to share this ride and his company again, we had some great discussions before and after the event.
Sheldon Lessard - 110m - Rode 85 miles on Burke, the remainder at Greenlake.
Shane Donough - 67m
Keito Swan - 63 miles
Jake - 63 miles
Calin Schepler - a lot of miles, not sure, but a lot
Dustin - 55m + Greenlake laps
Ken Barrett - 50miles and drove lots of Food Donations for NW Harvest!
Others - 50 miles+
James Peters - 100m of the BurkeGilman + whatever at Greenlake - Ended at 9 hours/100 miles, stayed on as support crew, rode bunch of laps. I have a new appreciation for what it takes to be an overnight volunteer!!
The crew in San Diego reports:
Rodrigo Gonzales "RODGON" - 96 miles in 14 hours
John Galac "samhell" - 16/17 miles
Thane - 16/17 miles
From Denver, Colorado:
Trevor Gibson "D-Tea" - 114 miles in 16.5 hours
Thanks Trevor! I really appreciate yours and Gravity's support on this!
I'm going to wait for more feedback from others then keep updating this thread, and fill in a lot of blanks with pictures and about the experience. Please shoot me your mileage (pavedwave@comcast.net)
I think Ted's going to own that record for quite some time. He rode the Subsonic Pulse with Pink Gumballs, Bennett 4.7 front, SplitFire rear.
LDP is king.
CONGRATULATIONS - YOU ARE ONE MAJOR FORCE TED!!!

Simply amazing. Ted, that's incredible, and to everyone else out there who accomplished they're personnel goals. After 67 miles total I am completely worn out and worthless at work. It'll be a couple days until ill be skating!
Thanks for making it happen James!

Barefoot Ted has his feet on the pulse of LDPCongrats to Barefoot Ted and his outstanding Long Distance Pumping skills. A truly remarkable accomplishment, 242 miles in 24-hours, wow!
What makes this feat even more impressive is Barefoot Ted, 43, has been involved in the sport of LDP for less than 2 months. He is an accomplished ultra-marathon (100 mile) runner, who also was a hot skater in the 70's in So.Cal.
About 9 weeks ago Barefoot Ted noticed James Peters pumping his board around Greenlake, and introduced himself. Barefoot Ted sensed an opportunity to learn a new sport and James agreed to loan him a Subsonic Pulse board with Bennett/Splitfire trucks and Abec 11 Big Pink wheels. That's the board he rode 242 miles.
The previous record of 208 miles in 24-hours is held by James Peters.
Soooo, a huge honorable mention to James Peters for his generosity and for being a great ambassador to the sport of LDP.
Again, a huge congratulations to Barefoot Ted on this major accomplishment.
Yeeahhh Boyeeee!

Howdy Folks
Slept a lot yesterday, but feel fine today.
Went skateboarding over at Volunteer Park. Really enjoyed it...even feeling stronger.
A HUGE HUGE thank you to James Peters and all the crew in Seattle. It is hard to believe that I had never even heard of Long Distance Pumping before April 1st this year! What a blessing to have met James on that day at Green Lake.
Couple weeks later, James lets me borrow that magic board. My gawd what a beautiful, magical thing it is...Subsonic Pulse 40.
After James let me borrow the board, I rode like a maniac for days and days...crashed...took a couple weeks to recover...went to LA for some healing sun and great training rides...and then back to Seattle.
I am going to write down more about my experience during the ride, but just to let everyone know my secret:
1. Be sure you have an excellent LDP board...I did.
2. Train yourself to run an ultramarathon...i.e., learn how to pace youself for a full 24 hours
3. Study about 24 hour nutrition and hydration and electrolyte needs. Nutrition is key.
4. Have strong healthy feet...and let them have the freedom to move around to get blood flowing everywhere...that's why I wore my Vibram FiveFingers...allowed my foot to do what it does best.
I went into the event just trying to see what it would be like to go 100 miles..., but the weather was perfect and the energy strong. I just could feel Eric's energy and his energy got me inspired to keep going too. I was determined to go the full 24 hours and Eric helped me have someone to follow.
After some rest and some skating today, I have come to the conclusion that someday, some one in this sport is going to achieve 300 miles in 24 hours. Before yesterday, I would have said that 220 is impossible...
So all you out there, live strong and push the envelope of the possible...
Look forward to seeing you on the giant paved wave...

Ted--------wow!
Ted----------WOW!
I knew you were something else the moment I saw you. I still remember seeing you jump on a board at the Ultra 3. Keito and I looked at each other and thought the same thing. "If he desides to do this he will kill!"
Boy did you ever......
What you have done for this sport is truly incredible. What an honor again to be apart of something SO great. I "walked" away from this learning so much from you. Not to mention how stoked I was just to be in your presence. Thanks again for everything. (Next time can we have some more pasta though....jk)
James your friendship is something I wouldn't trade for all the gold in the world. Pumping and skating have brought so much life to me. I love every second I do it. Skating with you on the Burke was so much fun. And even though I fell short in the early morning you supported me to no end. Thanks - I don't know what I would have done without you and your family.
O - Ted your "Special" lady.....I don't know if I could ever thank her enough....Please give her a hug and a kiss for me.
Mark,
Where do I begin.......
Your support for all of these weeks prior to the Ultra have inspired me so much. I had a dream of a hybrid board and you help make that dream a reality. The “Loaded Proto Fathom” went above and beyond all my expectations. Pumping – Pushing – Long-distance skating will never be the same for me. I had moments on the Burke pumping that were pure magic. I look forward to many years of skating this engineering master piece. To make matters even better, I made a complete recovery just 2 days later all thanks to your board. As soon as I get back on Friday night I’m taking my baby strait to a garage session. Change my back truck angle and I’m ready to roll. Perfect!!!
Thanks a Million!!!!!
Eric

Eric,
Was the Loaded Proto. a loaner? Any word when Loaded will unleash that beast? I am using a Dervish for LD Pushing, but it is awkward for pumping. I use a Gravity SN until my Mermaid comes in for LDP. BUT, the Loaded proto. seems to fit like a glove from seeing you haul some major ass on it.
James and Co.,
What is the best way to go about organizing a 24 Hour skate session in conjunction with yours in San Antonio? I know we have a lot of runners, bikers, and skater--then those who do all three--in SATX. I just have never organized anyone on a larger scale like this before. Any tip would be great. Thanks,
Jim

hey guys, great vibes at the lake, and the buzz here is a good reflection of that. Patrick you have been an amazing support on all these rides, even out 'sweeping the course' on this one!! thank you bro for the nice words.
Eric, it was a pleasure having you up here again, your stoke is contagious and you are always welcome back, though we'll try to slow down the schedule a bit now Good to hear you came out on the other side healthy and blazing through another work week... Superman on the weekend, and now Clark Kent, hehe. That G-bomb inspired setup really did do wonders for you, and I'd like to see how it evolves.
Ted -- what a blessing to have crossed paths at this particular time in life and watch you bump this game up a notch. I'm enjoying the rapid exchange of ideas and your inspiration to the sport, and want to get into talking about what's to come next! I'm amped even more now to see what is possible...we talked about the 200-mile club, now maybe the 250 club? 300 club? Yowzas...
Jim, it would be great to see your Ultra in San Antonio! Eric was telling me how any Houston 'scene' is basically non existent at the moment, and I told him how many years it has taken to get even a small group of like minded guys in the Seattle metro area out on LDP excursions even to some limited extent. I'd love to help in any way in the future plans, and I'll keep posting on this link about Ultraskate planning and past experiences: http://pavedwave.myfastforum.org/about61.html
