The surfer is a tow in surfer you can tell by the front foot strap.
Tow in surfing has wrecked big wave surfing IMHO it allows any yahoo that can hold on to a tow rope to get out.
I miss the days of Bradshaw , Laird Hamilton,Gerry Lopez, Eddie Aikia, Ben Aipa, Dane Kealoha, Shawn Thomson, Mark Richards, and the other big wave riders of days of old. That paddled through the channels and used them to get out out. Then paddled down the wave under their own power to catch the wave. If you want something you need to earn it.

I hear ya Terry, and I do think that SUP boards for example can get kooks out to the bigger waves before they're really ready for it -- but in the case of tow-ins with a jetski, anyone taking on that stuff need to have balls of steel no matter what, otherwise Darwinism will take care of them quick. As you note, Laird was one of the classic guys, he's also the guy that's really made tow-in as popular as it is now.
Personally I don't like the idea of using gas-powered vehicles in natural / peaceful environments anyway, especially for recreation so I think of tow-in kind of the same as snowmobiling, mountain motocross, etc...
