need help with a good setup

hey Im Trent and i recently have been looking for a good starter longboard for my girlfriend to ride with me because i have been teaching her the fundementals of the sport of longboarding and she really wants a board i just wanted to know your honest opinion on what would be the best setup for carving and cruising and pumping on some flat surfaces we will be doing LDP for the most part, shes is a very kind person she weighs about 123 at about 5'4 and id hate to give her a board she wouldent love so hit me up and tell me what yall think we should get!
jat.

LDP are not very beginner friendly setups. So unless she knows how to pump I would get her a more versatile board.

I got my girl friend a humu as her first board, cause she thought the look super cute. That did not work out well ... well for her. I ended up with a kick ass mini!  Very Happy She feels much more comfortable on her LY Spud which is a supreme long distance pusher and much more stable setup (with RII 180's and 97mm flys).

she knows how to do it but its really scrapy i have an original path37 with s8 trucks and she needs something easier to pump on i will be getting her a newboard friday exept i really dont know what to get her i was looking at some longboards called kracked skulls but they look cheap and she says she wants to learn ldp

I actually have a light flex Mermaid on hand that's too light for my 165lbs.  It might be perfect for her size and weight, depending on her flex preferences.   She can push it all she wants and learn to pump later.  I've put a few locals on LDPs here over the past years and they took right to them, with a few weeks of more pushing than pumping but very quickly picked it up.   Let me know if you're interested, and I'll ask Gareth if he doesn't have other plans for that deck!

I think what Jat's really saying about the beginner friendly thing is that it takes longer to really get a pumping board feeling dialed and just right.   Let alone figuring out how to pump well -- but I think the skills and the gear go hand in hand.    If she really wants to learn pumping, I think it's best not to waste too much time effort and expense on a drop through or drop deck, unless you know for sure she'll want two decks anyway.   I'd just go straight to a topmount with a turny truck in front and stable truck in the rear.    It's getting the bushings and risers angled right that takes some time and tweaking -- but we could get her set up on something pretty decent right off the bat.

that may be just what she needs but she wont have the money till friday, how well do you think that board will work for pumping on the flats like boardwalks?
pavedwave

pumping flats is what this board was designed for!   i'd want to know what other boards she's been on and what she liked first though.    this board I would call  "extra light" on Gareth's flex scale -- for someone in the 90-130 lbs range.    cheers

ill have to talk to her about it, how much do you want for it i looked it up and it looks pretty ugly but i told her looks doesent matter it probably preforms the oppiset it looks. She has been on my path37 pintail from original its more of a cruiseing board  then anything but it also pumps somewhat but i find it does better....backwords? lol

if you don't like the looks, and that's really key to you, there are other options.   no price or anything yet, I have to see if Gareth wants to sell this board or already had someone else in mind.   no sweat either way.    cheers

i was also looking at the subsonic pulse 40 for her would you know the diffrence in preformance between the two?
pavedwave

the pulse is typically a stiffer flex and comes in a mellow concave and deep concave with no camber.

the mermaid has a livelier flex and comes in a mellow concave and camber.

both are fairly similar in stance, because I designed them both around the same time  (the pulse came after the mermaid)

performance is really up to the individual.   if you put both these boards on a "race" course, the rest would really be up to the individuals and their styles.    people tend to pump a stiffer deck up to speed faster, but maintaining speed for long periods of time is easier, IMO, on a deck with a little more flex.
