help the new kid with simplifying a pumping set upI am still relatively new to long boarding (6 months) and am trying to learn how to pump. I occasionally get the motion, but I am trying to make it easier with a better set up board. I have read the guides on here with the videos and all.
I am not going for a hardcore LDP setup, just something that will be easier to pump. I ride my board five or six days a week to class and PT in the mornings. I use it mainly on campus, but I also go and carve hills and do errands on it to, so it is an all around board.
I currently have a Landy Mummy with the standard Bear Grizzlies (180mm) with the standard Kyrptonics 70mm unknown durometer. I also have a shorter homebrew deck that is 29.5 inches long, 6.75 inches wide with a 21.5 inch wheelbase. The Landy has a slight bit more flex, but not by much.
I have a set of angled wedges that are roughly 12 degrees.
I was looking for more advice on how to set up it, with which deck would be better, how to throw in the wedges if required, and how to set up the trucks. Thank you for the help.
And if anyone happens to be from Colorado State University that is replying to this, I would be interested to meet you and go hit some hills, or you can just laugh at my attempt at pumping.

I'd go with the Mummy, for width, length, and flex/responsiveness. If you have any other trucks to work with that are narrower than 180, that would also make pumping a bit easier. And put the angled wedges on the front first until you get that dialed, dewedging in the back is best, but not quite as important as getting the front just right.

Thank you for the advice. I will try varying the wedge on the front. Is it just a feel once you think you have the wedging correct (I would assume so, seing this seems to be a personal taste). Thank you once again.

i just got a Landy Mummy too. I love the way it feels, you can definitely pump with the thing, although they're more of the short little quick slalom type pumps, not nothing you'd really LDP with.
I actually flipped mine over, and i'm using it upside down so it has rocker instead of camber.
I have mine setup with a Bennett 5.0 front truck with a single angled soft wedge riser (7 degrees for that one - soft, not hard, 80a duro), and a 1 degree riser from my khiro kit. it also has some added wedging due to the flipping it over and giving it some rocker.
back is de-wedged 9 or 10 degrees with a Randal 125 truck (42 degree base plate). i really like it. it's super carvy and pumpy at the same time, and stable too. it feels like a better carver than my loaded vanguard as far as i'm concerned.
board might be just a wee bit stiff for my 140lbs though. i kind of wonder what it would feel like with camber now (right side up). i'll have to give that a try when i get some time.

Thank you for the advice, I don't weigh much more (153 lbs) I might have to try it upside down like you have it, sounds interesting. And as I said, I wasn't going for a hardcore LDP setup, just something that I could pump to and from class. Thank you for the advice, I am still playing with the wedging, and have to get the khiro kit, seems to be the best deal for tuning set ups. Thank you once again.

i probably should have tried the board right side up first. it feels great going down hills with the rocker and for running through cones while going down hill, however, i have a feeling it's a better pumper with the camber.
i've been riding it a little bit more, and on the flats, the flex isn't quite as snappy as i'd like it to be (compared to my Pulse 40). it's definitely a stiffer non-noodley type of flex, but doesn't have the snap and pop that i'm looking for in a pumper.
if i get some time, i'm gonna try flipping it back over again tonight and trying it out like that. i'll let you know how it goes. i'll probably need to wedge a little bit more, since i won't have the added degrees from the rocker and i'll probably lose some from the more aggressive camber shape at the nose.

Well thanks to the advice here, I got lucky and had a good streak of a good 40 yards where everything just flowed at a very very slight uphill section. I lost the rhythm, but then stopped in utter disbelief that it just worked. What a feeling. This might become an addiction, and I wouldn't complain. Once again, thank you all for your help and suggestions.

It works better upside down for me. I'm just too light to really get much flex out of the darned thing right side up, especially not while pumping.
Anyway, i'd suggest flipping it upside down. The rocker shape locks your feet in place, and also makes it easier to flex the board. It's not quite the same kind of flex that i've come to really like from my Pulse 40, but after riding today and really dialing in the setup, i've come to the conclusion that upside down with rocker is much better than right side up with camber. It requires a slightly different pumping technique that really drives off of the back leg. Also, the pumping from this shorter board uses your legs more and less of your core, although you still need a good core technique.
Anyway, final setup -
Front: Bennett 5.0 - khiro soft angled riser (80a duro), and a soft 1/8" riser that i cut to place at the thick part of the wedge (estimated total wedge of approximately 9-10 degrees - not including angle from rocker shape).
Bushing setup - in this order listed with side closest to the board first, and ending with the king pin nut. White khiro cone and orange khiro cone with narrower upper parts of cone facing each other - followed by hanger - follwed by white khiro barrel - followed by black bennett washer - and finally the king pin nut.
Rear: Seismic 155mm 30 degree stable turn with light green springs, no tension load. Single khiro soft angled riser.
Wheels: Speedvent 73mm 80a duro all around.
that about covers it. if you don't have the trucks, that's no big deal. the most important part though is to go pick up a Khiro wedge kit and a Khiro bushing kit. Needed for any discipline - especially pumping. You'll probably not end up touching the yellow, black, or purple bushings though, so that part is kind of a waste (but buying each of the white, orange, blue, red bushings that come in the kit costs just as much ore more).
If you're gonna buy any truck at all, get a Bennett 5.0 for the front. It's the most important one. For the rear truck, right now you can just put anything back there, de-wedge it, and use harder bushings.
anyway, GL with all of that. glad to hear that you've had some success pumping thus far. are you using it upside down or right side up?

Currently it is the normal side up. I will have to try it upside down. I am working on getting the bushings and wedge kit. Thank you for all the advice, it has helped a lot. I will be interested to try it with the board the other way.
If I end up buying new trucks, I would probably go all the way and create a dedicated LDP setup, probably a very similar to the set ups on the main page.
