EW Superglider Pumping?

So I just put together my EW Superglider pumping setup and it's not working out as well as I had hoped. I've got a Bennett 6.0 (wedged 10*) in front and Tracker RT-S 149 (dewedged 5*) in the back. While I realize the Superglider isnt an ideal LDP deck, I feel like I shouldnt be having so much trouble. Ive been pumping a S9 Bomb Hills deck on Gullwing Chargers without any trouble, so with the new gear, I wasnt expecting any difficulty. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your bennett is probably a bit too wide.

While Im now sure I should have bought the 5.0 instead, the trucks I learned to pump on (GW Chargers) are a full inch longer than the 6.0s I have now. I feel like Im missing the famous "diving" that Bennetts have a reputation for. Im not even close to getting wheel bite, even with Khiro whites as loose as theyll go (and at close to 200 lbs, this seems surprising). Would bigger wheels help? im running on 70mm nameless right now, but since i cant get wheelbite even when I try, Im thinking I should look into some bigger wheels. Again, any suggestions are much appreciated.

So I tried putting the Bennett/Tracker combo on my Bomb Hills deck and it pumps great, so I can only assume the Superglider is a terrible pumper, worse than an s9. I hope Im wrong about this, Id really prefer to ride the superglider, but it might just end up being a dh/pushing board Sad If anyone has any idea how to improve the superglider's pumpability, lemme know.

ps. are there any retailers in WA that sell Khiro bushings, or do I just have to order online?

hey I didn't even notice you were from Seattle until you mentioned WA!

Gravity Sports in Renton is now carrying Khiros, and there's also a new skateshop on the north end of Lake Washington called MotionBoardshop, that might have the full Khiro bushing kit, but I don't know how many singles they carry.

Might want to call Gravity first and ask what they've got on hand:

Gravity in Renton - ask for Dave or Mike

What you're probably experiencing on the Superglider is the dropped "kicknose" effect.   Basically there's a tradeoff-- for that lowered deck, you lose some of the ease of pumping power effortlessly into your turns, that you get otherwise from a topmount.  But still, you could get it pumping better with the right bushings dialed in, and a narrower hangar would also make a difference.   Hopefully I'll catch you down at Greenlake sometime!

Hey there, thanks for the great response, Ill have to check out gravity sports soon, I think thats near the cedar river trail too, might make a day of it. I was out at greenlake this morning and ran into Alan, man, the mermaid is even sexier in person. I usually skate Alki beach in the afternoons if youre ever in the area. Right now I have the Bennett/Tracker on my BH deck and it pumps better than ever, Ill have to wait for better bushings to try again on the superglider.

UPDATE: After a lot of trial and error, a lot of sweat, and some help from Gravity Sports in Renton (great shop btw), I think I finally have the superglider dialed in. Seems it was a combination of bad bushings and some technique that was giving me problems. Id still say its a little harder to pump than my BH deck, but it looks a hundred times cooler so.... Smile Thanks again Paved for the tip about Gravity, it was an excellent shop with a great selection of longboard gear and very informative and friendly staff, Id suggest it to anyone in the area.

bump
care to share your setup for the superglider?
LDPanda

Sure!

EW Superglider
Bennett 6.0 Front
Tracker RT-S 149mm rear
Big Zig Limes (inverted in front, regular in back)
Front Bushings: Khiro white barrel superglued to a white cone on bottom, khiro white barrel on top.
Back Bushings: Bennett stock red urethane (shorter) on bottom, blue khiro barrel on top.
Two 5degree wedges in front, One 5degree dewedge + 1/4" flat soft riser in back

Ive made one slight modification to the Bennett 6.0 up front, I wrapped two layers of gorilla tape around the kingpin leaving a few threads unwrapped up at the top. It seems to make my bushings fit a little tighter and reduce shredding.

Edited for clarity.

great to hear that!     i usually call Motion now just because they're right in the 'hood, but they don't carry a lot of stuff that Gravity does.

and btw, that gorilla tape idea is great.   very simple and easy solution.

I picked up a wedge kit and some soft wedges over the holidays and have been working on redialing the superglider. Now im running:

Front:
1 Khiro 80a angled wedge
7 degree rail wedges
1 degree rail wedges
-- plus the 4 degrees of natural wedging = about 17 degrees of wedging
Khiro orange cone superglued to white cone (hourglass) on bottom
Khiro White barrel top

Rear:
1 Khiro 80a angled dewedge
1 Khiro hard angled dewedge (not sure, but around 5 degrees maybe)
1 soft 1/8 inch riser
Bennett stock (shorter) barrel bottom
Khiro red barrel top

Although i get a little bit of wheel liftage in the back at low speeds, its not a problem becuase i dont stay at low speeds long  Cool  its fast!

Edit: i got off early today and had some time to do a longer run on this setup. I got really really tired, probably becuase i havent been able to skate as much lately and the holidays have added a little "resistance" to my waistline. One other thing i noticed was that the rear of my board was getting away from me a little bit, like fishtailing more than usual or something. I dont know how this could be as ive dewedged it quite a bit more than my old setup and put in harder bushings. Dunno, but hasnt seemed to slow me down and its a fun feel, so im not going to worry about it for now.

new superglider setup

i re-set my superglider up today...i wanna try it, as soon as i can...probably won't be for another month or so, but this gives me time to really think my setup over.

Front setup
Venture 129 High hanger on an Indy plate
Wedged 5*
75a abec barrel bottom, orange/white conical top

Rear setup
Tracker RTS 149
Dewedged 7*
blue stim bottom, yellow bones top

Using otangs as wheels, as well as a toestop.  I noticed on indys, the superglider wasn't as pumpable as with trackers, and it was noticeably stiffer too; mostly due to a shorter wheelbase.  The vindy front (inture?) is much tippier than the RTX, and it's got about the same wheelbase.

I'll post up more results as they come in...for now, i'll pray for rain to wash all the sand out of the sidewalks and roads

The superglider is an awesome sprinting board. Its also a great compromise between pumping and pushing efficiency. Its got a great responsive flex too. Unfortunately, i really cant say its an awesome LDP deck. I felt such a difference the day i got my pulse. Having the width up at the front truck makes an enormous difference. Right now my superglider is sitting in my closet unmounted because im not sure what to do with it. If i had the balls to bomb hills i would prolly use it for that. I also considered using it as a backup pusher for the ultraskate but with big flywheels its not that much shorter than my pulse. My final word on the superglider: Great for under 20 miles, if youre going further, get a dedicated ldp deck IMO. [/endrant]

so, the vindy front was pretty gnarly...see my post about pivot cups for details.  but, the geometries of the trucks don't 100% match up, so with the added stress of wedging the truck and using taller bushings, i guess the hanger put excess pressure on the pivot cup, which exploded on me and made me eat concrete.

i've found that a superglider works great for an all-conditions commuter...you can kick up hills, pump down them, and still be quick and nimble.  also, as an added bonus, with a tracker front and 70-80mm wheels, the board will stand up on its nose.
