Born to Run, age-old wisdom vs. engineering

Our own Barefoot Ted is featured in this new book by Chris McDougall, "Born to Run"   Sounds like it explores a lot of the themes Ted talked about on our last ultraskates and during the STP.

Check out the vid, explains the Tarahumara 'secret' --

Ted's home-brewed Huaraches have a ton of appeal.  I really like the simplicity, flexibility and recycling goodness built in, seems like they'd hold up well for footbraking, and I wouldn't feel as tentative as shredding up a new set of five fingers.  Gotta try a pair!

Dude!!!

I am not sure about the huaraches for LDPing...at least not for me...cause I got so used to the FiveFingers (FFs)...which allow me to feel the board...

My huaraches are thicker than the FFs!  I like to think of them as portable ground...with a long history in the world of running to survive = eat.

The problem of course with the FFs is that they can wear out pretty quickly...unless you patch'em like I was doing...

...then let's find some thinner tires!?    Very Happy

Maybe there is some kind of refuse / recyclable rubber you can find that's soft like this stuff you did the soft-huaraches with??  Though I assume there must be some balance you're after between supportive-yet-pliable...

The biggest problem for the traditional huarache is the leather knot right a the ball of the foot...which may hamper foot braking???  Not sure.

Yes, I do make thin, flexible huaraches...

Peter's you've got me thinking...that much I can admit.

I am surely making a lot of huaraches since the book came out, so more will be trying them.

I do not think of them as the ideal footwear...I have mastered them to some extent...run a 50 mile mountain ultramarathon in a pair of 4mm huaraches took some dedication and persistance..., but can't say they are my first choice.

On the other hand...I have been improving my huaraches each generation and think that my leather top sandals are at their best and my leather laces are consistently the best from my current supplier.

Who knows, the book may start a trend...  I do have a tentative business plan to get a supply of huaraches being made in Mexico in the near future...Fair Trade made.  That would be cool if those became popular.
