4.3 or 5.0 BennettHow different is the 4.3 from the 5 in terms of action? Would the 4.3 be a better match for the Mermaid?

4.7? is there a 4.7? Look at the gear page... it might have something in there

haha that might be because of my typo yesterday on the fish, i said something about 4.7
i've found the 4.3 a great match on the mermaid, it can be really 'twitchy' when you want it to, like quickly zipping uphill, but you can stand farther back on the board and get some really big, smooth pumps in as well. the 5.0 in contrast sacrifices a little bit of that 'easy' acceleration on the lower end, but arguably gives you faster cruising pumps, a higher top speed. the 4.3 stays on my board because my commute has a really long, gradual incline.

Cool. My 4.3 and 106s are in today. I'll slap them on the Mermaid ASAP. I'll run your set up with the 129 as well. I really like the 5.0 with the 129. Let the experiments begin. Is it raining out in your area of Texas? Buckets in San Antonio. Thank goodness for parking garages.

Eric, I think the main diff on something like 4.3 vs. 5.0 really depends where you like to spend your pumping energy -- most of the time.
if you tend to stay up on the nose more and 'wiggle' your way uphills, and a lot of your rides involve long gradual inclines, then the 4.3 is better for that.
if you have big, open flat or even slightly declined areas where you can jam into some massive, huge, sweeping turns and crank past 15mph with ease, then the 5.0 is going to shine.
basically, i've found wider hangars give better top-speed potential, but overall I dig the versatility of the 4.3 -- and hopefully you'll dig it for the same reason.
btw, i've found this logic holds true with randal 150 vs. 180 as well...

I feel ya on that. It's a constant battle with rain. The sun taunts me all day and then it rains spoty all over Houston in the afternoon. Generally I win but not without a bunch of road rage to go with it. Ya I'll go pump at the garages too - the local kids always give me this wierd look like why am I doing this. If they only knew.......Bombing is fun but the way they do it generally someones always getting scraped up pretty tough....I bomb but I try to stay away from them by pumping each level as well.

Dude you are so right on - as soon as I put them on my Fathom I could tell the pump was a little quicker. I was stoked at first - but these days I'm a bit into the wider stuff with primo pavement and lemons. It wasn't that I couldn't cross step and power slide. But I noticed with the 129 in the back the board was wanting to slide a bit sooner than I wanted. Ya I could wedge it but since you showed me the dwedge I'm a bit found of the higher pumping speed with it. I bought 2 sets so no doubt one will be permanent on my Roe. But with the Fathom I need to give it some more miles before I make a judgement on them. Although if I were to do another Ultra - for sure 4.3's
How do you feel about a 4.3 in font and a 139 in the back for a wider sweeping back turn?
Sorry "When I do another Ultra"
On a side note JP it's pretty awesome that you have done all the hard work on this stuff. I'm constantly changing things but with your foundation and know how it has been with out a doubt much easier. To think what you must have gone through to get where you are now. Much respect....
Thanks

going on reading about the extra versatility of teh 4.3s i thought i might as well pick some up and try them with teh 106mm tracker, here is qhat i found out.
i have a Galac LDP deck and tried it at first with the 4.3s.
-i felt the turns to be too quick ala rtx style truck and couldnt quite get to speed fast enough without expending a massive amount of effort.
- it was a breeze going up hills, even more slanted than usual hills were really easy, though it feeling like a slalom deck in wasnt a big surprise.
- for just cruising on the boardwalk it was amazing, i could weave in an out of people and scare the shit out of the bikers no prob, hahaha, still i was always with teh wanteing to go faster without eating shit by pushing the back truck too much.
- overall i could go nonstop for about 15 miles without getting very tired, the faster pumps drain you after a while.
- the trucks felt like they wanted to turn back sooner than i was done with my stride, making it a little wied and cutting my pump short.
if i had a smaller LDP deck i would run these no matter what, but for the Galac they just didnt fit my style of riding.
on the other hand with my 5.0 bennet and the 129 in the back it was an incredibly different situation.
first i had to add a tiny amount of riser to the deck to avoid bite. setting up the trucks exactly the same way as to see the difference i went out again to the mission beach boardwalk to try out my experiment.
- It was a little harder to go in a slower speed, but it was still very very easy to weave in and out of pedestrians, and with fuller swings of the board too, which made it feel a little more surfy and stable.
- for me it felt overall alot better and smoother, i liked the fact that i could get to a good speed and keep it there with almost no effort. i could keep up with people om bikes that told me they were going 18 mph.
- teh deck responded very nicely and i was able to use the full flex and rebound of teh deck with teh wider and smoother pumps, also making it more fun with alot less effort.
- pumping uphill was not as easy but still ridiculously easy.
thats my findings on the two bennet tracker options. hope it helps someone in teh future.

Great timing for me... I have a Bennett 5.0 and a 6.0 on my workbench waiting for some time to try them out on my Galac.
How much riser did you add for the 5.0?
Did you wedge them any differently?

There is also the option, as Mr Galac says, you can flip/invert your wheels so as to get a narrower 5.0. However, he says that the inverted 5.0 isn't as narrower as a 4.3.
If anybody is able to measure wheel to wheel (inside to inside or outside to outside) on a 4.3 and a 5.0 using the same wheels it would be great for me and, I'm sure, alot of other people also.
For me, I'd really apreciate the widths of the Big Zigs and 77mm Speed Vents.
4.3 Flipped wheels - ???mm
4.3 Regular wheels - ???mm
5.0 Flipped wheels - ???mm
5.0 Regular wheels - ???mm

I used a non-metric ruler by eye, so take that into consideration.
5.0 with BZigs - 8 3/4 inches regular, 7 3/4 flipped
4.3 with BZigs - 8 1/4 inches regular, 7 1/4 flipped
I put on a pair of 77mm Vents to compare the width of the widest track and it came out to be 8 5/8 inches, so slightly narrower. The BZigs are supposed to be 58mm wide, whereas the Vents are 55mm.

NO WAY! so the big zigs flipped on a bennett 5.0 runs narrower than a regular 4.3? I didn't really expect that!
Are we positive with this?
And it makes the wheel width a whole 1" narrower! that's huge! People are saying that 5.0 is more for speed than the 4.3, although there's just 0.5" difference. another 0.5" narrower, and i expect they'll be WAY too narrow!
Does anyone run their wheels flipped regularly?
It seems to me like any new LDP skater would be better to opt for the 5.0 bennetts with the knowledge they can flip them?
Also of note, am i right in saying that all wheels could have different regular to flipped dimensions due to offset? if the wheel is completely offset, it would be give very different regular and flipped widths compared to a centre set wheel which would of course give the same dimensions.

WOW! Great information guys! Now I am kinda wishing I bought the 4.3... haha I have a 5.0 on it's way.
