Well, not exactly nothing, but soaking 2-3 days in hot springs is just about the best thing I can imagine in the middle of winter. My goal is to devolve back to amoeba state. Used to do this when I lived in Japan as well.
We'd been wanting to go to Mexico, Belize, Carribean, that sort of thing, but haven't gotten organized enough to do it. Plus it's $$$.
So 1.5 hours drive north into Canada, here we are - and highly recommended.
If you poke around, maybe google "hot springs hiking trails" and your surrounding city names, you might find some hiking trails and more natural, undeveloped springs. My brother and I used to drive up to this river in northern Oregon (Deschuttes, I think) where hot springs bubbled up from the banks, and you could just create little pools with the river rocks. Totally raw, and "free", though that was nearly 20 years ago, it might be commercialized by now.
I love winter (aside from cutting in to my skate time), the Christmas lights, the powder, a cheese burger and beer on the deck of a warming house, or along day of back country skiing capped off by a glass of wine and some fondue while staring out into the cold darkness of a winter night. All things we can only appreciate during the few month of winter.
But your right, when a hint of spring is in the air, the snow gets slushy and the cold of winter sets into the bones. Nothing breaks the cold and gets you over the hump like a few days at the hippy dip.
Thanks for the lead, next time we are visiting the family in Blaine, I will have to look up Harrison.
Long live Lolo, Glenwood, Pagos, Conundrum, Jerry Johnson’s, Saratoga, and every other geothermal delight Mother Nature blesses us with.
